NYPD Officer Cites 'Courtesy Cards' As Source Of Corruption

A New York City police officer is speaking out against the use of “courtesy cards” by friends and relatives of his colleagues on the force, accusing department leaders of maintaining a sprawling system of impunity that lets people with a connection to law enforcement avoid traffic tickets.

Though not officially recognized by the NYPD, the laminated cards have long been treated as a perk of the job.

The city’s police unions issue them to members, who circulate them among those who want to signal their NYPD connections — often to get out of minor infractions like speeding or failing to wear a seat belt.

In a federal lawsuit filed in Manhattan this week, Officer Mathew Bianchi described a practice of selective enforcement with consequences for officers who don’t follow the unwritten policy. Current and retired officers now have access to hundreds of cards, giving them away in exchange for a discount on a meal or a home improvement job, he said.

In the Staten Island precinct where he works, a predominantly white area with a high percentage of cops and other city workers, Bianchi said multitudes of people he pulled over for traffic infractions flashed him one of the cards.

I never had one, but I do still have an ex brother-in-law city cop that would probably give me one if I asked , looks like there’s always someone that wants to ruin it for people that don’t misuse them. Luckily, I really don’t travel in the city much unless I really have to so I don’t really need one.

I have a couple of them that were given to me. I've never used it in the city, just on the island. I've gotten out of a couple tickets. I use it, I don't abuse it.

I never had any type of card, but my friend's dad was the Chief Of Detectives where I grew up. So we never really ever even thought about having one. My friends and I also didn't abuse our friend's connection either.

Connections like that can also work the opposite way as well. There were times when we'd be hanging out in our late teens and early 20s on a weekend night in a park or someplace similar, and maybe being public nuisances by being too loud. The local cops would know all of the "hot spots" and whenever they'd see us hanging out, they'd always tell us something like, "Clean up, get lost, and don't come back this weekend, or we're telling your dad." 😂

@NYCQuestions1976 thats also the problem lol. NYPD is consistent of everyone knowing everyone else. Brothers, Sisters, Cousins, Sons, Daughters, Fathers. I know a girl who just got on the job whose father is a boss somewhere. So yeah..

Most blue collar careers are like that. A lot of people grow up with a particular profession in their blood. Like with just about everything in life, there are good and bad things that come with having a "family business".
