4.6K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. I don't care for conservativitism. To me that's looking at 30 years ago with rose colored glasses wanting to go back. The problem is progressives fighting conservatives endlessly created those times. Otherwise we would still live in caves. Conservatism has been and will forever be on the wrong losing side of history.

The underlying concept of your thesis appears quite evident in the names alone: conservation and progress. Is it conceivable that the pendulum can occasionally over swing towards the path of progressiveness? If yes, what is that point precisely? When had it gone too far?

We're still creating a better future. Until we reach the stars and even after we will need to push beyond that.
The biggest hurtle has been and forever be appeasing conservative that we should never do. Conservatism has its place like dire survival but in modern times Conservatism creates problems to justify being reactionary and holding back humanity.
Ussr was such a boobyman they hired Osama bin ladin to fight them in Afghanistan. How well did that investment pay off? The banana wars over throwing governments in south America over bananas and oil. Creating our southern border immigration crisis. - 1 y
I see. Do you have a point in which you think progressivism has gone too far though? What is that to you? Are you suggesting that it has gone too far, but it's still for the greater good?

While progressivism plays a pivotal role in fostering social justice and equality, its extremes can lead to unintended consequences. Economically, progressive policies, if not tempered with financial sustainability, could induce high public debt, inflation, or raised taxes, thereby affecting economic growth and stability. Over-regulation, another potential pitfall, could suppress innovation and entrepreneurial ventures, thus restricting economic dynamism. Furthermore, an overemphasis on state provisions might inadvertently cultivate an over-dependence on the government, possibly dissuading individual effort and responsibility. It's essential to note that these challenges arise not from progressive principles per se, but their unmoderated application without regard for economic feasibility, individual liberties, and the delicate equilibrium between state intervention and market operations. When taken to extremes and paired with a disregard for democratic principles, progressivism could contribute to the concentration of power, as witnessed historically in cases like the Soviet Union under Stalin. Nonetheless, societies with strong democratic institutions and a balance of power typically avoid such extreme outcomes, suggesting that a balanced approach to progressivism is key. With all that being said, you don't see progressivism ever going too far?

Nope. Let's look at even star travel.
"From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs"
This is the only way star travels is possible. Anything less will result in bioshock. Andrew ryan, ayn rand be damned.
This globe will not be survivable forever. The sun will not be survivable forever. Death or travel is enviable. Whatever grievances we have on communism needs to turn into growing pains so we can travel. - 1 y
I disagree, but I appreciate this back and forth. Thanks for posting.

I believe it is an important question worth considering. Once the foundation of basic truth loses its firmness within society, it can be seen as an indication of progressivism taken to an extreme. If we are unable to reach a consensus on fundamental factual matters like XX or XY chromosomes, it becomes challenging for us to maintain cohesiveness as a nation.

If identifying as a conservative involves acknowledging the biological realities of sexes, including distinctions in the endocrine system, temperament, neurological variances, bone structure differences, temperament disparities, and reproductive variations, then I’m a conservative. Denying well-established biological facts solely to shield a purported marginalized group would indeed be illogical. It's important to consider scientific evidence and factual information when discussing such matters.

So 1% of 1% of the population living their own lifes who don't want to genocide is holding back humanity?
Or are they just a scapegoat of our economy in bread and circle way. People foaming at the mouth to ruin people's lives because they can't find affordable housing. The rich getting richer with every percentage of inflation while all the workers can only survive on government food stamps. so our tax money is subsidizing the richest companies highest earnings ever.
No it's a random trans person fault. We did this 30 years ago with gay people. 30 years from now will be a new scapegoat. - 1 y
Bringing in economics? You didn’t really address anything I brought to your attention directly.

You’re all over the place

That's what you gotta do dealing with new times. You learn new things along the way that changes old standards. Otherwise we'd still live in caves.
So with the culture war against trans we did the same thing with gay people like 30. 30 years from now after conservative lose the trans culture war they started will be a new thing. That is how i started my post without mentioning trans people.

I was done with Republicans three years ago, not only because of Trump, but also because of congressional nut jobs like Hawley, Boebert and Greene. That and the disturbing movement for Christian nationalism.
That doesn’t mean I’m pro Democrat either. Both parties are a train wreck. If Republicans want my vote, they’re going to have to clean up their act, promoting Trump and DeSantis is not the way to do it. Third party May be what’s best for the US.00 Reply

Because Republicans come up with candidates like Trump. Never voted for a Democrat before him.

Because the Democrat candidate is the best one. When they aren't, I vote for whoever is. If it was up to me, the ballots wouldn't even LIST a party.
