The British statesman and political philosopher Edmund Burke wrote, "The effect of liberty to individuals is that they may do as they please. We ought see what it will please them to do before we risk congratulations." Therein lay the problem with laws that permit abortion on demand.

A society that premises its law as "Choice"- to use the locution of abortion rights advocates - effectively leaves open the question of the value of human life. It becomes not a standing principle, but a subjective judgment to each individual. In such a society, human life becomes not an end in itself, but mere instrument. Life becomes not an object whose preservation is the highest standard, but rather a convenience to be maintained or not according to the satisfaction of another's will.

We shape our laws and then our laws shape us - see also the civil rights laws of the 1960s which have effected a revolution in race relations. (The idea that a black man and a white man cannot sit together at the same lunch counter is as alien to this generation as Neptune. Yet in 1965 it was pretty much the norm.)

Inherent then in the pro-choice argument is the idea that life has no value save that which each person chooses to attach to it. It denies society any authority to make a collective judgment on such questions. Therefore, in this view, the law may not afford protection to life except at some arbitrarily defined (and inherently subjective) point.

This then conduces to an assertion of power over rights. Life is maintained not as its own end, but according to the will of the person who, effectively, controls it because they can. An ethic of convenience is established and it is a slippery slope on which to build a culture and a legal edifice.

Such a society will not value life that sees life as not an end, but as a means to some other end. Indeed, that is why at about the same time as the culture began to shift on the abortion question we also saw a rise in child abuse, spousal abuse, divorce, out of wedlock births and other social pathologies. These were not unrelated phenomena.

Aristotle said that the first questions of politics are, "How ought we to live? What kind of a people do we wish to be?" The implicit answer of those who support abortion on demand is, in effect, that it is nobody's business. Predictable results follow. One cannot expect the society to absent itself from collective moral judgments on the value of life and then expect an ethical social order to result.

It seems like a pretty necessary medical procedure for people to have access to, but I think people have some pretty wild misconceptions about who's getting abortions and what kind of situations these women are being faced with.

There's this rather silly impression a lot of people have that there are just thousands of women who, if not for federal abortion access rights, have no idea when they get pregnant until months in and/or would be emotionally held hostage by controlling men who would force them to carry their children to term. Women in situations like that probably wouldn't be able to access an abortion, even if they had a federally guaranteed right to it because they're likely trapped in some kind of backwoods cult or some shit.

The reality is that the vast vast vast majority of women are accessing extremely early term abortions, before the fetus is barely anything more than a clump of 15 cells. It's a purely elective decision they make, and I'm in favor of their ability to make that decision.

It's a choice that every woman should have if they want it.

I truly don't understand those that think it's murder like do they even know how hard pregnancy and motherhood is on a woman? Especially in the US where we have high mortality rates for birth. A mom and baby could end up dead anyways and where are these people then? Are they gonna start helping moms and babies when they are vulnerable? Most likely they aren't so they need to shut their mouths unless they are gonna step up to help.

Personally, I support a woman's right to choose. Abortion is a nuanced and complex topic, and everyone is entitled to their own opinions and beliefs. However, I believe that women should have the freedom to control their bodies and make decisions that are best for them. I also believe that abortion is a healthcare issue that should not be restricted by the government. For me it´s currently the second. I can´t say abortion is none my business because the way society handles abortion question shows what society values and currently Western societies go in a direction of everything is meaningless, there´s nothing that has inherent value not even life.
But at the same time I have a hard time saying it´s the states business because that would mean the state has to control whether or not is done or not. Sex is an intimate and private act so if the state gets active in that it turns a democracy/republic in a police state.
To me abortion is murder because it takes the chance of a human being to live and make the world a better place. To me the origin of the problems is that human think they can have anything without consequences but that´s a myth because there are consequences to anything.
There might not be a seen one right away but there are always consequences. The consequence of abortion is a degeneration of value and it might lead in a world where humans that are not considered strong enough never see the light of the world no matter how smart or good they might have been. Go back to all these engineers, master minds their chance to come to the world is probably 1 in a million. The world as it is now faces mature problems in the future. I therefore any human being that is born can be a problem solver.
I think what would end abortion is a change of culture that is less focused on sex but that´s a movement that has to come out of society and won´t be changed through a ban of abortion. I don´t think that a ban would be helpful because the trenches in society can´t be destroyed by law.

How can killing innocent babies be more acceptable than killing non-innocent adults?

How can we Not expect mothers to take responsibility for the expected risk of conceiving from their choice to have sex, when we expect everyone else to take responsibility for the unexpected risk of an accident from their choice to drive?

I support options D & E upto 10 weeks if it was non-consentual (rape/incest, etc.) and upto 24 weeks if the mothers life is at risk or the child would be born with a severe disability. This matches UK laws.

I can see a lot of people here just want to see a total ban on the procedure. Of those people I ask you this, your daughter was raped and she became pregnant. Would you make her keep the baby?

Abortion is going to happen whether it’s legal or not, so by keeping it legal it allows those who choose (and need) to have the procedure to get it carried out in a safe manner.

The mother should have to kill her own baby. I heard the story about an abortion doctor that did hundreds of abortions. One day the little baby kicked his hand with its little foot. It didn't want to be ripped into pieces. It wanted what all creatures want... it wanted to like. The doctor broke into tears and never performed another abortion.

I'm all for killing babies, but mothers should have to be the grim reaper and kill their own. Don't be a coward and expect someone else to do your dirty work for you.

I think the woman should have the last say on abortion.
It's for her to handle the moralities of it and any psychological impact after.
Remember it's not just a off switch and your not pregnant, a woman has to go through the resulting miscarriage and her hormones will be all over the place after.

I can see all sorts of arguments there, but I'd never cause one nor would I accept one.
Sex, and coitus especially, is for baby making, for pregnancy, not for aimless fun.

I think abortion for anything other an an effort to save the mother from dying is immoral but banning it outright isn't going to address why that is.

The only way that can be fixed is through a cultural shift. Maybe banning it could do that but it's not going to change the minds of people who see their own children as literal extensions of themselves.
