Why is it when a soldier returns from being deployed, we as a society abandon them?

My grandfather was a marine, and was in the Korean war. My great grandfather was in the navy and fought in WW2 and helped storm the beach at Normandy. I am not in the military and this is because my grandfather begged me not to join. He gave me stories of his time in the military and the fact that he was basically abandoned when he was discharged. If you dig into the statistics, the biggest population of homeless are veterans.. they tend to spend 6 years homeless post discharge. Divorce rates among military men have risen 42% in the last decade, So the women are abandoning these men too. Once every 2 minutes a veteran commits suicide. They are the second highest rate of suicide among men second only to men who have lost their children due to divorce.

Why are we giving money to foreign powers when we have people who literally sacrificed EVERYTHING for this country who can't get help. Its not that they dont seek it, its that they can't get it. I personally believe that if a person has been in the military, he should never, ever have to worry about housing, food, medical, anything. We should be taking care of these people better than we are and i think our politicians (ALL OF THEM) should be ashamed of the fact that this is even an issue. And i do mean ALL politicians, Left right center, i do not care. All politicians and those that vote for them have blood on their hands.

This is a tough one to answer. When it comes to soldiers it does break my heart to see veterans homeless, have no VA support, treated as if invisible when they need help.

I think the answers lie in the fact that with everyone already busy with their own problems, they don't care for their fellow man. The real sad part is they sacrifice their time and lives for the very country and government they want to serve and protect which as little as 1% have the calling to do. Now this same government only uses them for proxy wars and conflicts used to capitalize over bullshit foreign policy as pawns and casts them aside when they endured the worst of humanity up front in place for the ones who SHOULD be fighting.

They are also still seen in a bad light by fellow countrymen for the reason I say above. We can thank Vietnam vulture reporters broadcasting the war and citizens treating them poor on the return home and there are still many that do that today. They have the balls to talk shit to the ones who endure and fight, but not enough balls to do what they did when it came down to it. It is because of the volunteers that do it that these individuals don't because they would more than likely desert if the draft and mandatory service was still a thing I'm this country.

Now, are all veterans good and deserve the best? No. There are shitbags that wear the uniform and use it to exploit certain privileges that paint us in a bad light. The way I see it, the government only views and wants to look after soldiers for as long as they serve them and the military, otherwise they don't want to waste money for what they sacrificed.

That is why VA centers are shit. That is why soldiers are invisible once they are discharged. That is why they have higher suicide rates than others. Doesn't help when the same government they defend also turns their focus to foreign affairs to defend as well as illegal immigrant support all the while training Americans to hate America, it's foundational values and anyone who tries to defend that core foundation.

It is disgusting. That money going to helping illegals and foreign countries should go for the soldiers who gave everything for the fight, especially if they have confirmed PTSD, loss of life or limb to go to them and their families.

The vast majority of 'Western Society' want to keep veterans at arms length because those veterans have done what the majority feel to be an unclean job and keeping veterans at arms length keeps their own hands 'clean',

I'm different, I come from a Military Family, I was a Reservist Military Engineer, my father was a full time Military Engineer,, my paternal grandfather was a Military Blacksmith /Farrier, my Brother-in law was Infantry. I've also been a Benevolence Caseworker for The Royal British Legion helping those who have fallen thorough the cracks. If I ever had the money I'd set up hostels just for Veterans here in the UK where they can be with others who have been through the same experiences, so they have a home base, instead of being on the streets, and give them the opportunity to learn skills that will help them in the jobs market today.

I've lost too many friends due to the shitty actions of 'Western Society' who removed their support when Veterans needed it the most. And the Government goes on about 'The Covenant' between the Armed Forces and Society, but they are never their when the most vulnerable of Veterans need them the most. The Government sends hundreds of millions to other countries in Overseas Aid, which they do not need it they have Nuclear/Space programs, that money could be better spent looking after our own Veterans and providing the Facilities and help they need.

I don't mean to trash soldiers, but a lot of them are so traumatized by their war experiences they become violent when they go back home cause that is what they saw over and over again over seas. I would say the violence is one factor in why the divorce rate is higher among veterans. The amount of violent people who commit acts of aggression after returning from battles over seas is much much higher than the normal population because trauma can trigger these behaviours. They still deserve compensation for their voluntary service as well as therapy and healing, but many abandon them because of their changed behavioural patterns, rather than merely their depression or employment difficulties. I actually read in a survey that people in unhappy relationships are less likely to break up if they believe their partner needs their help to cope with life because people want to feel needed. The desire to care for others is just as powerful as the desire to be cared for by others.

First thing I would do is stop giving other nations money for whatever reasons they're doing it and I would make sure that every vet gets a house to live in when they come home that all of their hospital bills are taken care of and are recognized and thanked from the bottom of everybody's heart for putting themselves In harm's Way to protect us all

The government does not care about veterans. The VA is a maze of conflicting regulations and most people that go there end up leaving frustrated. My father was a WW2 veteran. He sustained foot damage in a POW camp and he tried to get a partial disability. He filled out all the forms and stood in all the lines and just got the runaround. He finally gave up and just got on with his life. Years later he told me that he still had all the documents and there was no time limit on applying so he was going to try again after he retired, Unfortunately he died before he had a chance to refile the documents. Maybe that was the whole idea.

I was happy that none of my kids expressed an interest in joining the military.

Because they fear us. We have extra issues. Mental health complications. And we have little sympathy for “normal people life problems” cause those simple things don’t mean shot to us when we’ve literally contemplated our mortality on a daily basis for years while living in total shitholes.

Some want to respect and honor us until they really get to know us and learn that we have demons. Then they want to lock us up and forget about us.

That’s why most vets won’t share stories with non vets.

We reject homeless and people whom are down emotionally, in general... possible exception is children. Trust be the underlying issue.

Spouses abandon because there is a lot of stress coming out of military work. Divide a low income house in half, and he goes homeless.

Because the soldier worship isn't real. They like the idea of it and what they do, but don't want to actually help them afterwards. Like how you may appreciate cops but don't care what happens with them when they retire.

I met many smart people in the US Army. The ones that do their 20 years and get retirement have something to fall back on. Many enlisted men and even officers that come out before then lack skills as has been said on here.

The government should train them and hire many of them in the government services instead of people who never served. They are smart and loyal and have proven themselves worthy over many of the absolutely stupid people the government hires.

The reason why is because western society is soft, weak, nearly spineless.

Look at behavior. Being an upstanding respectable citizen is a rarity & being a degenerate who records accidents, even assaults paramedics (as happened), and sleeps around with little to no self or respect for others is normality. It's a strange dichotomy. There is help available for those returning from war, BUT you can end up on "Red Flag" lists of you do seek help. Also, combat veterans have had suppression of emotion drilled in them fro. The first day of boot camp. It's not easy to just switch the training and environment off.

They make up a disproportionate percentage of the prison population too.

I think the issue isn't we abandon them it's they themselves don't gain the skills they need to function in society. They've spent years having others take care of them that when they leave they don't know how to pay a gas bill or handle a budget.

If I can be frank I think the army over recruits from the bottom, teens too dumb to go to college or learn a trade. Once out they've no one to look after them and zero skills that employers want.
