America did manage to purchase Alaska from the Soviets for $7.2 Million dollars. So why not Greenland?

We have been interested in acquire Greenland and talked about it on numerous occasions since 1867, most recently in 2019. We even made a formal offers to Denmark $100 million ($1 billion today) in gold back in 1946.
We took over the island in world war 2 to keep the Germans (who overran Denmark ) from controlling it after which we never actually left.
Greenland is one of the most strategically vital islands on Earth, and particularly vital to the defense of North America and theses untied States and Canada.
Whom ever controls that island controls the Arctic and the north Atlantic, and can threaten the rest of North America. For this reason the U. S. and particularly Canada can't afford to let hostile powers control Greenland. Likewise clearly hostile powers have an interest in it for the same reason.
Greenland's mere 56,583 is incapable of defending the worlds largest and most strategically valuable island so one way or the other they will have forign 'aid'. Its just a question of how mutually beneficial and voluntary that is.
Natural resources are anther issue which is becoming a major factor as Greenland moves towards independence. At the moment the Greenland goverment is mostly funded by Denmark affording Greenlander's 56,583 citizens a higher than natural standard of living, around $57k. As they reach independence this will drop dramatically unless they can replace that income with new industry they will be in trouble.
We can expect if Greenland goes down this path they will leverage their strategic value to help solve this problem and import other industries. Naturally offers are already being made by western and decidedly hostile Chinese competitors which is of course e not acceptable in the current political climate given how China's 'investments' can be used.
Yup... they refused. It's a smart move if you think about it. There was a time when people thought buying Alaska from Russia was dumb...
But back to Greenland... we build a base under the fucking ice there before... it's strategic and shit. It would've been such a good buy.
UNDER. THE. FUCKING. ICE!!!
Yeah, we did that shit!
oh... What type of base was it?
God I wish I could remember the name of the operation. They even had their own nuclear reactor for power under there. Operation deep freeze... Icebox... something like that. I forget what it was for exactly, but I think it had something to do with launching nuclear warheads.
Just looked it up... it was called Operation Iceworm. They called it a "research operation" but since when does the military just do research for no reason right? You'll have to dig to find what it was really for. Kind of like how that base is just buried in the ice cap now.
It was for launching nukes at Russia... hard to find that info though.

Monorprise gave a great answer. I didn't know that history.
But I have to say that the U. S. bought Alaska from Russia in 1867, 50 years before the Bolshevik revolution and abdication of Czar Nicholas II, and 55 years before the creation of the Soviet Union. There was no Soviet Union in 1867.
I heard he tried to purchase Moscow from Russia! Putin would not go for it!!!
lol!
Probably because Greenland's majority supports self governance. Denmark administers to Greenland largely in a ceremonial capacity. In other words, if it's not broke why fix it.
The only reason I see for Denmark to keep Greenland is in another 100 years they're all going to be under water. Greenland might need to become thier new home.😆
Alaska was offered to the United States, as the Soviets barely broke even with it financially. Greenland is not, why would they be that crazy?
Those talks are on hold until February 2025.
For real? I wasn't aware!
Maybe when he's re-elected 2024 XD
Greenland is very nearly an independent country at this point so Denmark can't sell them even if they wanted to.
Yes, he did. Would have been a fantastic purchase. But I don't see any reason why Denmark would sell it.
I recall he made such an offer. It would have the best such decision since the Louisiana Purchase and Alaska.
Because people live there and they wouldn't want to be part of the US.
How is that even possible when he was the President of the United States?
Since he was PotUS, yes?
Yes.
Denmark wasn't willing to sell, or no one besides Trump was willing to buy.
I thought he wanted to trade them Puerto Rico for it./
I don't know that he ATTEMPTED but he at least suggested it.
He actually did attempt it but they refused to sell it to him. I don't blame them. He probably wouldn't have paid them just like he didn't pay contractors that worked on his hotels and like he hasn't paid his attorneys. The guy is kind of a deadbeat. This is especially disturbing considering how much money he says he has.
Maybe he was on to something; with global warming the glaciers could melt and it could become quite livable.
He did say that after mistaking Greenland’s real owners. But hey, I didn’t know Denmark owned them either.
Denmark never accept it. Because USA found petrol the under of Alaska. Denmark dont want live second things as the same as.
Yes, embarrassingly, he did that. His sanity has not improved since then.
Trump should f off. The Greenland people won't want anything to do with him.
It’s too expensive
Like anything is too expensive for 'Americans' XPPP XDDD
