Oh yeah, typical American - a mishmash of a lot of things.
German, French, Italian, Canadian - both English and French Canadian, Spanish, and Polish.
Dad's side was the German, French, Polish and Canadian. In fact, when I was a boy, we would go to visit the Canadian relatives often. Most of them living in the beach town of Grand Bend, Ontario and the adjacent farming area of St. Joseph. (Plus a few relatives in Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal.)
Mom's side was Italian - north and south, specifically Sicily. In fact - a bit of European history writ familia - mom's parents were obliged to elope because her father was from southern Italian stock while her mother was from northern Italian origins. The northerners not holding the southerners in particularly high regard.
In fairness, though, from the perspective of a kid born and raised in America, hearing the stories of the great Italian rivalry made for some hilarious sit-com material. My life would not have been the same without it. Gosh knows.
Hi -
Make no mistake. I love Europe and have a great time every time I have been there. However, my great grandfather served in the navy in WWI. My grandfather served in the Navy in WWII. My uncle in the navy during the Korean War
Yup, I am a mishmash, but that what we Americans are.
On the flip side, if you ever want anyone who is not French to vouch for your "Frenchness," put them in touch with me. You - and I say this hand on heart - represent the very best in your country. For all your ethnic background - you are FRENCH, through and through.
It is a great pleasure and honor to know you. (Well, at least electronically.)
Hope the family is well. Cheers!
All my respect for your valiant ancestors, my intention was not to say that you are not American 🙂 you are a great servant of your country and I have a lot of respect for you and your work. I've already told several people here that you are the most intelligent person I've ever spoken to, and from whom I've learned a great deal.
You've been to a wedding if I remember correctly, and I hope you and your family enjoyed it.
Oh thank you so much for these words that go straight to my heart. I've made my own this phrase by the French historian who was originally a foreigner but who died for France in the first war
"I will answer them (...) that France, finally, from which some would willingly conspire to expel me today and perhaps (who knows?) will succeed, will remain, come what may, the homeland from which I cannot uproot my heart. I was born there, I drank from the wellsprings of its culture, I made its past my own, I breathe well only under its sky, and I have endeavored, in my turn, to defend it to the best of my ability. "
I hope you and your family are well 😊
My maternal and paternal ancestors immigrated to the U. S. from Ireland in the 1880s. They were Catholic.
My DNA says that I am 48% Irish, 35% England and northwest Europe, 13% Wales, 3% Scotland, 1% Finland. I have no idea how those other ethnicities, especially Finnish, got there, other than from my paternal grandmother and great grandmother. Some may have come from British colonization of Ireland in centuries past, or even from Viking colonization.
I consider my ancestry to be Irish.
Worth remembering the uk nations have been interbreeding for centuries. Lots of Irish blood in the uk particularly on the West coast in places like Liverpool where there's a lot of Irish/welsh/English intermingling. The finish connection could be Viking but again Scandinavians have been coming over here to work and trade for centuries too
@purplepoppy. Exactly. Lot's of non-indigenous Irish blood in Ireland over the centuries, too.
But my paternal grandmother wasn't pure Irish. Her maiden name was Thornton, but I think she was part English and who knows what.
And my paternal great grandmother was from Newfoundland and spoke French. Her maiden name was Proulx. I think her ancestors immigrated there from Ireland, but may have interbred with some mixtures once in the New World. With the name Proulx, though, I'm wondering why no French is listed in my DNA.
I never heard that Fins were Vikings, but they do come from that part of the world. I thought Vikings were mostly Danes and Swedes.
Everyone has origins/roots from different places. My grandfather’s parents were from Italy and Sicily and they immigrated to America. My Grandma’s mom immigrated from Eastern Europe (either she did or her parents did), don’t know anything about her dad other than he died when she was young. Pretty sure my dad’s family has been in America for a least a few hundred years and they’re primarily Irish. If I went off ancestry I’m 55% Irish, 19% Italian, 3% Greek, 7% Hungarian, then 1% Egyptian, 1% Iranian, 1% North African, 1% Sardinian and under a percent Levantine. The rest is broadly northwestern and southern European. I’m just an American tho.
My grandmother moved to Canada from Scotland. We have kilts, speak Scottish Gaelic the odd time, and cook a lot of Scottish food. But I feel Canadian <3

It's pretty normal I think. You've only known being french so it's normal not to feel like a Spanish.
I myself came to France from a different country and sometimes I take offense when someone disrespects france
(But I don't feel like a french person)
My parents are both Polish and immigrated to the US, I was the first to be born outside of Poland. I feel neither American nor Polish to be completely honest. Don't get me wrong, I'm proud of many things in Polish history and culture, but I have no loyalties to Poland. I don't share their mindset and they don't consider me a "Prawdziwy Polak". And to Americans, I will always be, "That foreign kid", and you already know how I feel about the U. S.😂
On my mom's side -grandmother's family is from Alsace–Lorraine of german orgin. Grandfather's family hales from Scotland.
On my Dad's side - Grandmother's family is English and Irish. Grandfather's family is English.
French Canadian, Irish, and textbook WASP.
My dad's side of the family has been in the US longer than there was a US. My mom's mom moved from Canada during the 30s and her family moved from Fance to Canada earlier. My mom's dad's dad moved from Ireland during the potato famine.
Well my origins are mostly English, Scottish and Irish. One of my forebears had to leave Prussia precipitously after the 1848 revolutions.
I am completely Australian but identify as being of Prussian origin.
obviously mine are german hence my good looks.
(trust me on that)
and my grandfathers father or grandfather came to australia in the 1800's hired by the BHP mining company as an engineer. Liked the place and stayed here.
Can you blame him
despite hat i have a great affinity for the British, the genius of its people and moreso a culture that fosters such genius to be productive. (Australian culture holds down its geniuses)
I do know my ethnicity yes - I'm Icelandic, born, raised and migrated away.
Traced back far enough I know half my family were Norman and the other half a mix of Saxon and Viking in 1066.
Everyone has an origin. But it's the ending that counts.
I'm a mutt. I've got German, Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, Dutch, Swiss, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, and Baltic in me. No doubt my ancestors got around and got busy.
Yes, I'm very mixed. Both my parents are from different ethnicities and my ancestors were also mixed.
My origins are Georgian, transcontinental country in Caucasia.
Maternal grandparents were from Wales, my paternal side is Spanish by way of Mexico/California
My ancestors came from Germany, Netherlands and England.
As far as I know, I'm 100% french, at least back to the mid 1700's. Couldn't find anything before that, as I'd have to travel the whole country to see the archives.
Irish, predominantly, British, French, German and a few drops of Cherokee.
My grandparents came from Italy. . My other grandparents came from Finland.
Mostly Anglo Saxon (English and Scottish) and some Greek and German.
Large Greek population in Astoria Queens NY. Many also have moved away from NYC.
My near ancestors are English and Scottish, but having my DNA done by Ancestry. Com, , I can be traced back to the Neanderthal period.
My origins are Italian from Piana Dei Greci, a town in Sicily.
