Is it normal for people to demand attention when they do good deeds and is that the only reason they do them?

I was attending a webinar this week and during Q&A I was surprised that almost everyone would interject unnecessary details into their personal life while framing their questions to the chief lecturer. It’s like they were asking questions to get praise and validation and not because they needed knowledge about their question topic. What surprised me is seemed 100% of the question askers had some level of attention seeking involved in their question asking. I now know why so many people were angry at my academic achievements, they thought I was better at getting positive attention then themselves, I had a big vocabulary and a confident mouth.
