Why is it still socially acceptable to assume negative things about a man’s sexual orientation but never a woman’s?

Anonymous

A friend of mine out up a FB post that went viral a few weeks ago. It was a simple meme that said “A man is handsome. Makes good money. However he is still single. Why?”

Most responses were like “well he is doing his own thing” or “he is sick of the drama” or “he’s smart”. But then a loud minority of women were like “oh he’s a closeted gay”. No men said that. Only women assumed that insult.

This isn’t the homophobic 90s anymore. There is no backlash for coming out in the modern world. Quite the opposite actually. You get celebrated and even get special privileges nowadays if you come out.

But it’s still an insult to someone who isn’t gay (especially if he’s a man) and people know it. So why is it still okay to bash single men for being “potentially” gay in the modern world? Women virtually never get insulted like that. Nobody calls attractive women who are long time single “closeted lesbians”.

But I still see people particularly women insulting men over this crap. The irony is women are generally much more liberal and pro gay rights. But they think it’s okay to bash single and/or eccentric men when the moment suits them? Why do they get away with that crap?

This is especially true for when a man turns down a woman he’s not interested in.

Women are much more likely to get away with that ego protecting insult “oh he must be gay”. A man would NEVER get away with saying that to a woman who rejected him. Never.

Also want to say if a western man says he’s straight in 2023 then he’s straight. There is more upside to being openly gay nowadays vs. being closeted.

If you want to gossip otherwise you are just a bully. Men used to be worse about this but now it’s women who do this crap more.
