Let’s say you had everything you needed and/or wanted, so you didn’t need to earn money. Would you still work? I mean any job at all? Do you enjoy the act of working and being employed? Or would you not?
I've had the option nearly all of my adult life. The answer is yes and no.
I have no real interest in a traditional job. That usually involves a level of dealing with awful people and just finding a way to cope with the discomfort.
I've gone back to work a regular job once just to work with kids and see if I still have the passion required to finish my Education degree. I did, so I left the job and went back to college until I graduated. But, I've had no desire to use the degree since I got it. I also became certified and licensed as an Emergency Medical Technician. Only used that a bit, but found another out of the box way to use it to make money.
Outside of regular job, I've found that I enjoy working for myself with hobbies. Buying houses and repairing them. Writing contracts, dealing with repairs and tenants, etc. Knitting, crocheting. Gardening indoors and out. Raising animals. Taking care of family. Planning really fun packed trips for months and going on them. Reading finance articles and investing. I keep busy all day every day in my own way.
Then, there's volunteer work. I helped plan and orchestrate events to raise money to build a no kill shelter. Would also go and play with the animals and walk the dogs for years. Was an elected board member for my local AKC kennel club, and helped set up, plan, and run dog shows.
I would imagine most people make work for themselves to fill the extra time. Technically unemployed but still keeping busy and making money just because.
This brings me back to a story when I was directing two different contractors at a house, and one asked what I do for work. I said, "nothing I guess" and shrugged. The flooring contractor laughed incredulously and said, "Yeah, you do! You fix up houses, you did all of this!" Then, he started pointing out all of the repairs I did with my own hands, and I realized he was right. I do the same work contractors do. I just do it on my own when I feel like it.10 Reply

I would create a home for all stray cats in need with people who would love to care for them...
And I would have more time for mentoring and for writing :D
But I would still want to work at least part-time as a software engineer. To keep in touch with the freshest technologies...31 Reply- 1 y
You are a wonderful person.

A couple years ago a big change in my life prompted me to seek alternative forms of making money. I'm not "employed" but that doesn't mean I'm not working. And after a couple years. I'm making just as much as I did at my 9 to 5 job, if not more. The drawback? This is not guaranteed money. I could, theoretically not make any. But the upside is there's really no ceiling to how much I can make. Knowing how much I'm being rewarded for my extra work is very inspiring though. I feel more alive doing this then I have in years at a 9 to 5 job.
So I'd say by your question I'd rather be unemployed. Because employment does not say you have drive. Pushing yourself to be successful says you have drive. I worked for years to solidify my base. If I fail at this I can ALWAYS go back and get another 9 to 5 job. But I know the limitations those jobs place on me. I know what mediocre success I can have there. That's fine if that's the best I can do. But it's not! I can do so much more. I'm learning that each day. And it's one helluva ride!

If I woke up a billionaire tomorrow, I'd build a recording studio and I'd start recording bands for very low cost, just because I'd enjoy doing that. It's not a very good business model anymore - studios have been closing for 20 years already and record labels are only willing to pay a tiny fraction of what they used to give bands to record in the past - but if money wasn't an issue, then that wouldn't really matter.

With surplus wealth, there is no reason to work. You pick a hobby like collecting degrees, arts, stamps. You take up activities like skiing, yachting or shopping. You rest and relax at home, on exotic holidays and in day spas. If you work it is because you enjoy it.

I'd do things I want to do, like grow more food on my property, continue to educate myself about the state of the world and how to protect myself from future calamities, do fun things, travel.

Honestly I would probably work if I was rich that's the irony there, because if I was rich I would try to run some personal business.10 Reply- 1 y
I’d like to be self-employed, owning my own companies. Because even if profit isn’t a motive anymore, impact will still be. I want to leave a positive footprint on the world with the companies that I build.

Like Eric Thomas for example, I know that he’d continue to do what he does, even without the millions that he makes. He started off homeless, eating out of trash cans. He used to live in poverty, and now he dedicates his life to helping people get OUT of poverty and actualize their true potential like he has — someone who started in the ghetto that now inspires people around with world by showing the success he has accomplished and teaching people how to do it for themselves.

I’ve always said, if I ever became a millionaire I’d keep my job. At least for awhile. Eventually I’d probably transition to a job that I enjoyed more. Probably hobby related.

I am a man. Men kill themselves if they don’t work. We are not the same. For our mental health we have to be doing something productive.
