You cannot judge the past with the present. But you are not an intellectual, or too bright if you don't understand racism as we know it now was invented by the Roman Empire. (Before America existed, if you're not sure of the era)
Mainly to "differentiate" between the White Catholics, barbarians and "conquered coloured" people. It meant the coloured people could not hold property or office, unless a White gave them permission or was their proprietor.
It's one reason racism, antisemitism and the like are illegal when presented before courts. You're harking back to those times and that thinking.

You can always look back into the past and look at the things people said back in the days and apply the modern standard to those.

George Washington was a slaveholder
he owned slaves
but it wasn't considered racist or the term racism even appeared on surface
it was the normal back then n he wasn't an exception but he did change on that n enslaved a lot later on

Let's just forget how the Romans recruited everyone into their army and gave them citizenship status. It was more about culture than race. Lets also not forget Italians weren't even considered white until just recently.
