If you live in the U. S. what is the average cost of a middle clsss house in a decent area going for in your area? Name your state if you don't mind?

Here in Florida in my city and neighboring cities and county a middle class decent looking house on average is literally going for $600,000 plus and when I look at the value records of that house on the website just 6 to 7 years ago is now almost literally doubled in price and forget about the annual taxes on the house as its literally almost $10,000 which is truly unbelievable to me how crazy expensive housing has become. 🙄

In Orange County in California, a 3 BR, 1 Bath house is going for $800,000. The ones in my neighborhood are close to $1 million. What people can even afford those prices with a mortgage of $6,000 a month or more? I don't even want to know what the taxes are.

You must have a affordable pocket of The OC. New - very typical middle class - houses in Irvine going for $1.2M.

@Flatmanlewis Irvine is a ritzier place than Anaheim. You can expect the prices there to be even higher than that. My house was built in 1957.

That’s crazy. I have no idea how people are buying a home these days. It was 20% down when we bought and $3500 mortgages over a decade ago.

I live in Canada but usually drive out to the US twice a month for Trader Joe 😆
Anyways, if we cut through Niagara Falls USA, houses are stupid cheap. Most of the neighborhoods are empty because the factories shut down years back. A lot of places are boarded up and costing under $52,000 but there’s no jobs for people to even want to stay in that area. We considered buying properties there but would be also a massive waste because nobody wants to live there.

Southern California, about 45 minutes from just about everything: the beach, mountains, LA, Disneyland: We bought for $400,000 in 2007 and our street has several homes which sold for $950,000 in 2023.

Here in Atlanta home prices have skyrocketed as well. I regularly see homes starting at $1M, but 500k - 700k seems average in better areas. Ridiculous.

To be fair, you can get a nice, smaller, home, for $350k if you are willing to drive longer and live in a poorer school district.

i live on the beach but going out to a middle class neighborhood in LA i looked up and it's around $1.5 million for a 2BR/2BA 1,200 sq. ft. house, and there are only 17 houses in that "middle" range, and they go from that $1.5 million which was the lowest up to $3.5 million which is 3BR/2BA 2,000 sq. ft.

an apartment in that same area is 2BR/2BA 1,000 sq. ft is $2,700/mo. up to $6,000/mo. for 4BR/3BA 1,800 sq. ft., with most of them around $3,500

the next neighborhood down would be something like Inglewood or Watts where all those gang shootings happened in the 1990s

I'm in New York. A 3 bedroom 1 bath house around me start at 600k but it would need work. Move in ready you'll be looking at 800k. When I bought my house 30 years ago the average house was going for 150k

In Northeast US, where I grew up, you can get a nice house for $300K. A similar house in the South, where I live now, is at least $500K.

Louisiana and most houses run between 180,000 and 300,000 depending on the area and schools.

@nawtee_me In Missouri you can get nice houses for under $500,000 or less. But with all the people from California moving there the prices are starting to rise because they buy all the houses for rentals and weekend rentals.
