Seems like parallels to the 30s are still strong. A Neo-Nazi party is now the second largest in Germany. And they self identify as “far-right”…fyi.

Funny how parties marketing “for the people” usually end in corruption. Silvio Berlusconi in Italy. Jean-Marie Le Pen In France, Björn Höcke in Germany, Trump in America and Brexit in the UK.

Why is national identity and national pride so important to populists? Serious q. Thats been a thing for decades.

If you don't understand why a national identity is important, then I can't help you. You are a part of a community of people with a shared race/ethnicity/culture/ancestry. And unlike other identities that people pick to fill the void (sports ball teams, pop culture), your national identity is inborn - it's literally in your blood. I'm using the original definition of nation which means ethnicity.

And the pride is the pride you would have for a member of your family accomplishing something. Of course, these days American society especially has become so deracinated that it's very hard for anyone to relate to anything American because American has lost all meaning. Mostly populists want to try to reclaim that sense of community and unity that has been lost to time thanks to a rapidly changing population and culture.
