How can ukraine get paid for the damages by russian aggression?

if i crash into your car, it is only fair i pay for the damage, so my insurance gives.

similarly when russia invaded n shelled ukraine, huge damage n debt that russia doesn't wanna pay! but owes.

1, how can ukraine get paid for the damages down by russian aggression?

2, what about debt collection style!

all they need to do is "do the debt collection they would do to me" for credit cards: take from the bank accounts. freeze all possible russian assets, collect for debt, so is ukraine money so use for ukraine weapons.

wouldn't that be fair? same as they take forcefully from me if i have debt?

If Ukraine wins or if they call the war off and give up since Russia won’t lose to them, I don’t see any winner in that war

Whether it is fair or not is a matter of opinion, so let us think about two important consequences of confiscating foreign reserves - something that was not done to Germany during WW2. 1) It would discredit the West as a place to keep one’s assets safe. 2) It would discredit the dollar as a reserve currency. The West’s heavy use of sanctions against individuals, sometimes for simply being Russian, has already discredited itself as a safe place for people to store their wealth, resulting in capital outflows. This is hurting London in a serious way. The prospect of confiscating Russia’s foreign reserves after the confiscation of Afghanistan’s foreign reserves (an act that sent many Afghans into starvation) and the confiscation of Venezuela’s gold has already resulted in an sharp increase in bilateral non-dollar trade, sale of Saudi Arabian oil in currencies other than the dollar, and an acceleration of China’s dumping of US treasuries. This in turn has resulted in a sharp increase in domestic financing of US debt, which will inherently erode purchasing power of the dollar.

Even if one believes the Western narrative about the Ukraine War is correct (I don’t), there is more to be concerned with here than what is fair.

Come on. China and any other country that might do something the US does not like will not keep their foreign reserves concentrated in dollars or in Western banks if Russia’s foreign reserves are confiscated. Nobody outside of the West views Washington as a neutral or fair arbitor of what is valid “damages” vs. theft.

Actually, I do not fully agree with you. The Germany comparison really does not work in no small measure because Russia is already a dictatorship for one thing. It is not likely that reparations would produce outcomes within Russia that are much different in socio-political terms, than the facts already on the ground.

The issue is really the extent of reparations - the Russian economy now only ranks 11th in the world, a considerable decline from where it was - and the likely impact of said reparations. At this stage, with the was between Russia and Ukraine still ongoing and the character of the Russian regime pretty well set, it is hard to define the parameters of those reparations.

A full out Russian defeat - such as Germany suffered in World War I - is unlikely and therefore Russia's capacity, and willingness, to pay reparations to Ukraine will be seriously circumscribed. Any peace deal reached between the two sides, on the other hand, will likely allow for some limited reparations.

For the West more broadly, the real issue is not so much the impact punishing reparations would have on the Russian regime as the degree to which they would force Russia into China's economic orbit. As I have noted elsewhere, the USA does not so much have an interest in Ukraine winning the war as simply not losing it.

The idea being to keep Russia sufficiently viable that its' inherent rivalries with China would continue. Yet this must be balanced against the need to reassure the eastern Europeans in particular that a resurgent Russia will not threaten them.

To wit, some reparations would be warranted. Perhaps not as much as noted above, but enough to deter Russia from further aggression in Europe while at the same time leaving it strong enough to sustain its' inherent rivalries with Russia. Suffice to say it would not be easy to calculate that balance, yet it is a balance that must be struck.
