Years ago I lost my cell phone. But luckily I was dumb enough to pay for the phone insurance. I ended up calling the cell company so I could have them send me a new phone.

Me: Hi, I lost my phone, so please send me a new phone.

Cell place: OK, so we just need the number of the police report.

Me: The what?

Cell place: The police report. The number is at the top of the report.

Me: Is this a joke?

Cell place: No, you have to call the police in order for us to honor your claim.

I refused to call the police and report that I set my phone on top of my car and drove off at the store. To this day I refuse to pay a dime for phone insurance.

I have a friend who was held up at knifepoint and the guy asked him "is your wallet worth dying for?" Unfortunately for the mugger, he was a retired Royal Marine Instructor... The mugger was in hospital six months and the cops arrested my friend for battery. Thankfully the CPS declined to prosecute as it was self defence.

Counting on the police to come and save you in case of violent assault is the same as being a victim.
People need the right to defend themselves and others. They should be considered to be the same as deputy police officers, barring the right to pursue and arrest criminals.

I understand the sentiments expressed. However, it is helpful to the community to go ahead and report the crime anyway. Because that adds data to help the police connect the dots and solve other crimes.
