Why in your opinion are men often overlooked as victims of domestic violence?

Question

One third of domestic abuse victims are men which is a lot.

The Office for National Statistics estimates that 1.6 million women and 757,000 men reported abuse in 2020.

Despite representing such a significant proportion of victims, men are silenced by the hostility they encounter when opening up about their experiences to the police and safeguarding services.

This means that there are probably a lot more men getting abused and it not getting reported.

Men have no right of self-defense against women and if they employ this when they are attacked by a woman, they immediately go to jail and are often found guilty. This is because most law enforcement personnel are men and are also simps in that they tend to just take women's word for it when they say they've been violently attacked even when there is a complete lack of evidence. What this means is that if a woman assaults you and you can't get away, you either have to take it. Or if you try to stop her physically in any way, you are very likely to wind up in jail and subsequently in court. The same cannot be said for women. A woman can usually physically attack a man with complete legal impunity.

I think it's because women are a protected and privileged class while men, while having been privileged in the past compared to women, definitely are not now as well as now nor have men ever been considered a protected class. As the women say, we have no need for men to kill the saber toothed tiger anymore yet we still need men to protect women today? Can't have it both ways... It's just keeping this gynocentric social order from collapsing

Two related reasons: first, because women aren't respected as aggressors, and secondly, because (in the US, and to varying degrees in most of the West) laws are arranged so as to minimize women's accountability in matters of abuse.

Let's take the second point first: many of our States, realizing the brutal pointlessness of the old "arrest the husband" policy in cases of domestic abuse (between 70 and 90 percent of which is reciprocal; people, regardless of gender, generally don't ignore it), started a "primary aggressor" policy, where the police would arrest whoever seemed to be doing more abusing. When this lead to a massive spike in women being arrested, the Feminist lobby stepped in and pushed the Duluth Model of domestic violence policy, which essentially boils down to "arrest whoever looks like they COULD do more damage", which is almost always going to be the man. That changed the ratio of people being arrested back into something they liked better.

This is where the second part comes in. Women ARE, generally speaking, smaller and less physically powerful than men. No argument here. The idea is that this means they're less capable of hurting a man. This is idiotic, as weapons exist, and not just guns; you could EASILY kill someone with a kitchen knife, especially if you came upon them while they were sleeping. The ability to do harm is also not a cause of proclivity to do so. What really throws a wrench into the narrative is the different levels of domestic abuse in same-sex couples: among lesbians, it's horrifyingly common; among gay men, it's basically nonexistent.

I have never, and would never strike a woman for any reason, but have been struck by a woman with a fist, although not in the face... so I know what you are talking about.

Women very often use emotional abuse, which is very hard to prove... Moreover, even if physical violence occurred... men often do not report it because they do not want to be ashamed that a woman beat them... and even if they reported it, I have a feeling that they are not always seriously taken...

I guess because of the stereotypes people have created for men and women over the years. You know the one? Men are seen as strong and protecting, and women are seen as dainty and subservient !

Stereotypes need to be broken down if case by case views are to be accepted!

society thinks that men could never be abused because they're physically stronger than women so if a girl tries something you could very easily defend yourself. also people tend to think of domestic violence as just physical. also any abuse directed at guys from girls isn't taken that seriously in general. guys who are victims of that are often very ashamed and dont talk about it because they feel like it will make them look like pussies, so you dont hear about it at all

If you create a patriarchal society, why would anyone in that society think men are the weak and abused ones?
The irony been men did it to themselves. If we didn't establish a patriarchy, men wouldn't been seen as stronger, more powerful and immune to been the victim.

Because the narrative is that they are the only ones who initiate domestic violence. Any evidence that they could ever be victims throws a wrench in that narrative so the powers that be makes sure that those who speak won't reach as many people as they should.

Thankfully, that looks like this is starting to change.

Society in general percieves men as too strong to be victims of physical violence at the hands of a woman, so it's not taken seriously.

Any form of abuse, verbal or physical is the most despicable thing imaginable. Persons that inflict this kind of abuse are mentally disturbed and need proper medical intervention or in some cases incarceration.

I really don't know either, but I'm aware that female on male abuse is out there. Maybe gender stereotyping makes men reluctant to report it, and the authorities don't take it seriously if they do
