Tomorrow, I have jury duty. A question was brought to me, the question was whether or not I was involved in a car accident involving an injury.
My answer is yes, it was on February 17th, 2019. I was speeding on a bridge, and I rear ended a woman. I apologized to the husband greatly, and he said "well, you seem like a nice kid". I was tired and I was speeding, which I shouldn't have been doing.
I should've taken special precautions when I was tired, but I didn't do that, I was driving 60 on a 40, and on a strongly curved bridge, at that. The woman said her neck hurt, but she didn't feel that it was an injury, but she ended up leaving in an ambulance, anyways, to get checked out.
I was 100% at fault for the accident, and accept full responsibility for what I did.
The fact that I was asked a question about such matters tells me that the case is likely a civil case about a car accident involving a personal injury. While I acknowledge that some people may try to abuse this system to get rich, it has a valid place in society. And for the record, I do NOT believe the woman I hit was trying to make money, she's a kind soul, just like her husband, and I hope they're both doing very well.
I'm kinda nervous to go in there tomorrow, do you have any experience in this regard? I have my suit and tie ready, it's set up by my bedside, so when I wake up in the morning, I'll put it on and get going downtown to go to the courthouse.
I've been in a jury pool 4 times. Twice I was picked to be on a jury, twice I was excused. There's nothing to be afraid of. Both the prosecuting attorney and defense attorney will ask each prospective jury member a series of questions in a process called voir dire. Their purpose is to pick a jury that is at least neutral, and if possible favoring their side of the case. Just answer the questions honestly, and don't be disappointed if you are not picked for the jury. After all prospective jurors have been questioned, both attorneys go through a selection process, with the goal to get agreement on a complete jury. For a criminal case, that's usually 12 jurors and 1 or 2 alternates. For a civil case, that's more likely 6 jurors and 1 alternate. Anyone not selected to be on the jury is excused, and can go home.
Enjoy the experience. It's a good way to see an important part of the justice system... a jury of your peers... in action. It will be boring at times, but can also be interesting.
If you are picked to be on the jury, you will sit in the jury box and listen to testimony during the entire trial, that usually lasts 2 or 3 days. Juries are generally not sequestered. They are allowed to go home at the end of the day and report back the next day. Please be sure to be on time.
No. I’ve been called for jury selection only twice in my life and didn’t make the cut either time. I’ll likely never be called again. Prosecutors tend to dismiss potential jurors who have a criminal record. They don’t want us rapscallions mussing up their rigged system.
By the by, if you haven’t actually watched “Jury Duty”, you definitely should. It’s one of the best things i’ve seen on TV in years! Unique, funny, heartwarming, surprising and in every way brilliant.
The only thing that they are concerned about it whether or not your past experience would influence your sense of judgement in this particular trial. They want you to be able to only look at the evidence in this trial, and not go by your personal experience. Just relax. It is educational to be there and see how the system works. I've been on a few juries. To me it is kind of fun.
I was called for Jury Duty over here in the UK, I had to block out 2 weeks but it could have been longer, but it turned out that I only had to be at the courts for 3 days because the Barristers (Trial Lawyers) were staging a go slow, so the number of trials that were on the docket for those 2 weeks were drastically reduced.

I worked for a company that sold equipment to police and fire departments. When I had jury duty I told the judge that I had done business with the arresting officer's department. I was excused.
Nope. I've been put on call 4 times in my life. Every time I get on the list I'm second string so I've never even had to show up to the courthouse. They always get their jury from the first pool and then I get dismissed. At least that has been the pattern so far.
Yes, it sucks. It’s really an inconvenience having to wake up that early in the morning and drive and then you have to try to figure out a way how to get out of it once you’re there so you don’t have to come back for two weeks in a row and serve on the jury.
It's understandable to think that way, but at the same time, I must admit, I am a pretty good candidate in that regard. I'm quite objective, and I put personal bias aside quite easily
i did. just stay calm. listen to what others say. when someone says what you also suspect , say "it seems that way" see if they can support their idea.
