1 yThe problem with any discussion like this is defining what "equality" means.
Does it mean equality of opportunity or does it mean equality of outcome? There is a very significant difference between the two.
In America, women already have equality of opportunity under the law. As a matter of fact in many cases they have more opportunity than men because there are so many programs that are only for women and men are excluded (No one complains about these because men are just presumed to be the oppressors and therefore not entitled to extra benefits. Women are just presumed to be oppressed and therefore no one questions when they get benefits that men are not entitled to.).
So women already have equality of opportunity.
So what then is the complaint?
It seems to be that in some areas there isn't equality of outcome. In other words if a male and a female have the same type of job and the male earns more, that is automatically considered to be discrimination.
But there are studies that show that such discrepancies are often explained by things like the fact that women have a higher absentee rate from their jobs than men.
Should someone with a higher absentee rate be paid the same amount just because they're a woman? Should a customer have to pay more for the product because women built it and employers had to subsidize the cost of their absenteeism and charge more for their products? Should a company that is forced to charge more than its products because it employees more women than it's competitors be forced out of business because it cannot compete at a price that allows it to succeed in the marketplace?
All else equal an employer might rationally prefer to hire a man instead of a woman for a certain job knowing that she is more likely to have a higher absentee rate.
Women are also far more likely to leave their jobs after they have a child than men. Again given a man and a woman who both have equal qualifications, would an employer be wrong to choose the man rather than invest in the cost of training an employee who is more likely to leave? Should those costs also be built into everything that people buy?
So there is already equality of opportunity for women. The debate that needs to be had is whether or not there should be equality of outcome for both men and women regardless of whether or not it benefits a society or infringes on freedom of choice for others in the decisions they make.

Anonymous(45 Plus)1 yNo, because women really don’t want equality. Many of them want the good parts of being a man w out having the responsibility of men. Like selective services. There are no laws on the books that say women can’t do the same things men can’t. But the laws are certainly stacked against men especially in the court system when it comes to divorce, child support and alimony. Feminist aren’t protesting to get into a lot of the manual labor fields. A majority of women aren’t willing to step up to be the bread winner of their household if she’s making more than the man. She usually wants someone who makes as much as her or more. A majority of women aren’t going to wake up in the middle of the night to go see what that noise was. Women still get the benefit of being freed first in hostage situations along w the kids while the men are expected to suck it up. Men are still expected to plan dates, pay for the date, make the first move, etc. These are just some examples of how women want equality but still expect men to treat them as princesses. That’s not equality.

I disagree. Feminism is egalitarian. If a woman wants superiority, not equality, she is not a feminist.
Opinion Owner1 yThat seems to be what a majority of women want, superiority but disguise it as feminism.
543 opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. I do consider myself one, but before you start heating the tar and collecting the feathers to torture me over this declaration, I have a philosophical disclaimer...
I don't believe in the extreme 21st-century feminism, which has completely derailed and disrespected the original intention of feminism (instigated by wonderfully classy and feminine ladies like Simone De Beauvoir). I believe a woman can be a true lady and stand up to herself without any negative assumptions about "ALL MEN" being a certain way... Every human being is different... there's no single reductive formula to understanding all "Category X" of the human race. We're all designed to be equal and we all deserve the basic respect that so many individuals and countries have fought for since the dawn of civilization, that's all.
So... feminist? Yes... misandrist? Not by a long shot.013 Reply- 1 y
What is the difference between old feminism and 21st century feminism? Feminism has been advocating equality since day one.
- 1 y
I don't think there is a difference. Just because some people are hostile to men under the name of feminism does not mean that feminism has changed. Because this is not the real feminism.
- 1 y
@White_Swan_ As she said the ORIGINAL concept of feminism back then was fine and good, especially in an age where women literally were not allowed to speak or do anything outside of the house. But the so-called "feminism" that took off in the 1960s to today is nothing but ridiculous militant garbage meant to assert women above men, to put men down, and as an excuse for women to be sexually loose "because if men can, why can't we?"
- 1 y
@ManOnFire thanks for twisting my words and becoming part of the problem. It’s things like this that CAUSED feminism to be derailed.
@White_Swan, please read up on Simone de Beauvoir and learn about what an authentic woman who can manage to feel feminine and dignified looks like. Her work is very beautiful. She was way, way ahead of her time.
She’s probably turning in her grave knowing how many boneheaded creatures exist today who have twisted and mangled her words and ideas too…. - 1 y
@ManOnFire Yes, you did, but the manner of your agreement left something to be desired. :/
- 1 y
@ManOnFire I know that there are those who try to change the meaning of feminism, and that some women think they are feminists by being anti-men, but this is not real feminism. I `m talking about this. Everyone should be a feminist without changing the meaning of feminism. "If men can do it, why can't we?" I am aware that there are people who say this, but I do not agree that this has anything to do with man-hatred. Because this is not about victimizing men. We must be feminists to protect our current rights. What is the subject of the book you mentioned? Does he advocate that women be both passive and equal to men?
- 1 y
@White_Swan_ No one needs to be a feminist. It is not required for anyone to support women having rights and human decency. Unless you like clubs and groups.
Wanting to do what men do is not hating men, that is correct. Hating men is going on and on about "patriarchy" and thousands of years of oppression blah blah blah, and wanting to use stats of male violence and male suicide as a reason for why people shouldn't have to regard men as human beings also deserving of respect. That is what modern day feminism is about. These same groups of women are also the ones who didn't think that women of color should have any rights, but it only mattered if you were a white woman. These feminists are not noble in my eyes and do not garner my respect whatsoever. - 1 y
@ManOnFire no, it is necessary. Without feminists, we as women would not have the rights we have now. Why doesn't anyone need to be a feminist? If one does not become a feminist, male superiority will continue. Talking about patriarchy means hating patriarchy, not men. A true feminist defends all women without any distinction between black and white. Feminism is for all women, not just white women. If you don't like the new feminism, you can defend the old feminism. You obviously want to have less rights than men.
- 1 y
@White_Swan_ Feminism is SUPPOSED to be for all women, but it hasn't worked that way. Male superiority is non-existent today because most men are weak and bow down to women because they fear making them upset, and because men want to give favor to women they are attracted to.
I am not a woman. Unless you were being cheeky. But anyway, do what you feel is best. - 1 y
@ManOnFire Today, feminism is for all women. “There is no male superiority today.” It's a very ignorant thing to say. Only in 6 countries are men and women fully equal. In all other countries, men are superior. Moreover, even though we are legally equal, we are not equal socially and culturally. Men have been leaders for years. Men never submitted to women and were never afraid of upsetting women. If you look at history you will see.
839 opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. would say i'm an equalitarian (so like i'm for women's rights and stuff, equality, etc) but not a feminist. mainly cause the louder strands of modern feminism often focus on trivial dumb shit that isn't real like manspreading. also they're trying to promote this narrative that nothing has changed since the middle ages and all men are evil psychopathic child fucking serial rapists. they also tend to promote all the other very far left leaning stuff that has nothing to do with women's right, and they try to make it an innate part of the movement. they also have greatly helped fuelling actual misogyny and reactionary beliefs in the last decade that are starting to hurt women

@LaureenVO Feminism is about women having power. It's not about equality for "both genders." People have been saying that for like the last 20 years and it's old now. If it's about equality for both then it shouldn't be called feminism.
Anonymous(30-35)1 yI've read through all the comments here, and your responses to them, and YOU are the problem with modern feminism because you enable all the bad behavior that has rightly given feminism such a bad reputation. Imagine the absurdity of Incels saying Elliot Rodger was not a real Incel because he did bad things. Think about it.
Feminists like you are a joke. Take some ownership for the bullshit FEMINISTS do and try to do something about it instead of just denying any responsibility for it. All you're doing is pushing the reputation of feminism further down the toilet.

Anonymous(25-29)1 yI am not. I think that the premise that we live in a patriarchy is not only incorrect but is "us vs them" by nature so it makes sense why the man-haters have taken over the institutions and has raised us to believe that there is something inherently wrong with masculinity by making up a strawman version of it called "toxic masculinity" used to explain their hatred while trying to make it sound like it isn't.
They were somehow able to justify giving masculinity all of the negative aspects (you can't have negative aspects of a positive trait otherwise it will cease to be a positive trait but ok) one could possibly have while saying that the good aspects in masculinity aren't exclusive to it and femininity can have it too.

No it does not because that label has never applied to me. I don't necessarily agree with feminism today. I think feminism is needed in countries where women lack basic rights though. I do recognize there is rights and social issues for men too and I don't see feminism aiming at men's issues at all in any shape or form. If I had the label of feminist it would be more old school.
- 1 y
Everyone who is egalitarian is a feminist. Feminism is an ideology that emerged against discrimination against women, so it does not defend men, but this does not mean that it is anti-men. Just because some women say they are feminists but are anti-men does not mean that feminism is anti-male. True feminism is not anti-men. Women and men are fully equal in only 6 countries, and socially and culturally women are everywhere behind men.
- 1 y
While I recognize the critical role of feminism in addressing historical and ongoing gender discrimination against women, I view feminism as a vital part of a broader egalitarian framework. Egalitarianism seeks comprehensive equality for all people, irrespective of gender, race, or social status. For instance, the legal requirement for men to register for the draft, disparities in family court custody decisions, sentencing differences, and higher rates of homelessness and suicide among men highlight significant issues that need attention. True egalitarianism addresses these issues alongside women's rights, ensuring a balanced and inclusive approach to equality. Therefore, while feminism is a crucial movement for gender equality, it falls under the wider umbrella of egalitarianism, which aims to achieve equality for all. The word Egalitarian is older than the word Feminism. So therefor Feminism is just one part of Egalitarianism. I hold the belief that everyone should have equal rights and opportunity regardless of gender. So while I hold traditional feminist believes its just one part of my egalitarian beliefs.
