I don't believe in vigilantism, but I definitely believe in self defense. Most trouble can be avoided if you are paying attention, and that's always the best way to go. But when trouble can't be avoided, you need to be prepared to defend yourself at the same level as the threat against you.

You will need to be able to defend your actions, so you need to know and understand the laws in your state. But first you need to survive, and your survival is NOT assured. Plenty of innocent people are killed every year, and many others are maimed and suffer for the rest of their lives. My first job is not to be one of those. The health of my attacker (s) is WAY down my list of concerns as long as they continue to be a threat.

It would depend on the situation.

I'll happily hand out instant justice if someone tries to harm someone I care about. Under those circumstances I wouldn't think twice about sending them to the ultimate Judgement.

Finding out later is different. It's more morally grey for me. My best friend has a teenage daughter who was abused aged 3 just before we met. This country being the juristic nation it is, despite it being 13 years ago, them knowing exactly who, what, how, when and why he did it the case is still "pending". I love the girl like she's my own kid, so her mum refuses to tell me who did it. I'm not sure what I'd do to him now, but I promise it'd be slow...

Is it really any different than, say the US or Israel, taking matters into their own hands and giving their attackers a taste of their own medicine? The difference being, with them it's do as I say, not as I do. When a private citizen does some vigilante justice they get in trouble. I'm sure everyone has seen examples of this. Maybe Mangione was doing vigilante justice. We all know how expensive Health Care is and how fast you can run up a $million dollar tab, or that they won't cover something or refuse coverage. So, unfortunately, sometimes it is not worth it, even when the justice system lets you down. Because you are the one who will wind up in prison. 😝

How do you define "justice", the problem with taking "justice" in your own hands is we don't agree on what it is.

So even if you were not a nutcase pushing unjust and poorly defined ideas like "social justice" we still wouldn't agree on who is guilty or innocent. Indeed we still don't given how courts are corrupted which is why some people want to do it themselfs.

Ultimately you only have sympathy for such up to the point of your own self-defense in clear cut cases where there is little time to make better choices.

Well, considering the low mental level of most humans, I'd say taking justice into own hands to be a bad idea in spite of the official justice instances being very defficient, because they won't even be able to imagine consequences in different fields. In case of doubt, don't !

I have lost faith in our justice system so I do handle things my own way. The guy who tried breaking into neighborhood cars a couple years ago met me and my neighborhood watch committee. He had to visit the hospital when we got done with him. Haven't seen him in our neighborhood ever again

Yes, once in a while when this happens, it works as a waking up the masses about the wrong happening in courts. Sometimes powerful people forms an elite class which made laws that do more harm than good. It reminds the courts, elected politicians, police, and lawyers to not overstep their boundaries and enter in our homes.

Well, sometimes it's necessary to make your own hands dirty. What matters is to remain cold, calculated, prepared and ruthless, emotions and excitation lead to errors.
Luigi didn't really have an escape plan and didn't use distance that is best concealing. This short euphoria after eliminating the CEO will cost him a lot.

Yes I do believe it is needed at times! I also wish there was a federal law which would require the death penalty for any person (absolutely without any question the person) who commits any crime of any kind where he has a gun ON him at the time of the crime. These have no doubt so trial should be quick and sentence carried out within 30 days of conviction.

to save or stop an assault absolutly. as revenge id almost never ends well even with faults the justice system is best. turn over evidence and testify. but there is a problem that results in vigulantyism
government unable or refusing to do there constutitional duty. and thats very often the result of politicions

Emotionally  speaking? I've felt temptations, rarely, but it wasn't Justice, it was payback. Philosophically  speaking? It would be inherently unfair because Justice is an external entity, for a sound reason.

Absolutely not, although a lot of people seem to believe in it these days. I think it leads to a breakdown in the rule of law and it leads to a lot of disorder and it potentially leads to a lot of mistakes when you decide with the wrong person is guilty of something and you punish them for something they didn't do. At least our legal system attempts to make proper determinations regarding guilt.

When it is self defense of self or family, yes. You need to respond in seconds. Then cops may arrive in minutes, if at all. And when you whack the perp, ya gotta know what your next plan is. My Oldsmobile has a 2-Tony trunk.
