1 ySurely there needs to be a body that oversees the quality of education for all. Once you let places go there own way you risk letting nutters into schools to push their own agenda. @DrPepper12 What is wrong with people like you and @purplepoppy thinking you not only know better than everyone else but must FORCE your views on everyone everywhere?
That is a serous question.
What makes you think this bigoted and imperial attitude is ok?
What makes you just assume that if others held your same imperial and bigoted additive they wouldn't use these tools to do exactly that to you?
The Federal Constitution is a peacefully cooperation contract that you can either respect or try to use as a weapon against your enemeis.
Those people trying to get rid of the entirely unauthorized Department of education want Peace, otherwise they would be using the same power to FORCE your children in your state to learn just that.
You are indeed ignorant, not only of the Terms of that Constitution which grants the common goverment NO POWER WHATSOEVER over education. But the nature of that so called "Civil War" being a war of independence not a "civil war" over control of a common goverment at all.
- 1 y
I'd be upset if they did that to science.
- 1 y
@monorprise CHILDREN protected and provided for in a civilised society have the right to an education. That parents seem to think THEY have the right to decide what "education" means is where parents need to sit back and use their political power to TELL government to educate those children who have rights in way's that are acceptable. Parents even have the opportunity to HOMESCHOOL their children which HAS to be legitimate and resilient enough to match standards and expectations of competence in society. NOT TO BE BRAINWASHED into extremist mythologies which are not conducive to civil society. If parents want to indoctrinate children into whatever cult or mythology and "train" them to behave in antisocial and harmful ways towards others then those parents are not fit to be parents and should be disallowed access to children in a way that pedophiles are prevented from accessing vulnerable children.
- 1 y
@Shiprex Children are the property of the parents who actually went thou the effort to have and make them NOT the "community". We demonstrate this fact in allowing parents to take thier children with them wherever they go including immigration to other nations.
How they choose to raise their children is not your buiness nor really subject to your control. You might demand the children follow certant rules just as you do of the parents to live among you. But you don't get to tell them what to think.
Indeed if you can't be troubled to even bother to have enough of your own to sustain your culture they would be wise to iqnore and reject any advice you might have on how to think. Clearly your ideas are not working for you, why would they agree to jump off the same cliff you did?
- 1 y
@monorprise the "customer" in purchasing education for its children is the community at large if which parents are just one of many stakeholders.
- 1 y
@DrPepper12 The fact that Goverment rather than parents thou tuition, or kids thou loans finance education is a major reason for its corruption and failure.
The community at best has a real interest in the kid knowing the division of power under the constitutional agreement. This is something that can be taught at anytime and indeed should if you want to have immigrants.
When it comes to the skills for living and without a doupt
The values of living are the business of the parents. Such values really does need to be from the parents as such values must necessarily be sustainable enough that they lead to the children themself likewise doing so themself in passing it on. Otherwise such values are as dangerously worthless as they are doomed.

u 1 yThe states have all the expertise needed to run their own education systems. Federal involvement has just provided an opportunity for the left to indoctrinate young people with political ideologies that are quite divorced from educational goals. WHen this issue comes to the forefront, you will see that all of the opposition will come from the left.

What curriculum items in particular do they force on the states?
- 1 y
Education isn't a left-right issue. Your argument could be made with Republicans wanting more religion in public schools and no CRT. Issue with leaving it to individual states is that each state will push their own agenda in to their curriculums. If you grow up and study in Florida, you'll be unfairly challenged if you, as an adult, move to a state in a whole other region like New York or Illinois.

I've had students from Florida here in NY. 💯 Right. They were studying "local history" a Confederate propaganda course while in NY multiple years of world history are required. Don't even get me started on the sex ed / health classes from Florida.

1 yNOTICE how education has been going DOWNHILL since the creation of the department of education. ANYONE who's had kids get through the public system in the US KNOWS that there is NO discipline in the classrooms and everything is focused on liberal progressive DEI nauseating ********. END the insanity. END the department of education and focus on STEM. Bureaucrats do NOTHING to benefit students. Simply have mandatory standardized exams to WEED OUT MORONS and then spend the money on the kids who want to learn and have the capacity to learn, the rest can be sent to clean toilets.
I intentionally got into an argument with a woman once about the Dep't of Education. She insisted that we need it. I pointed out to her that we won two world wars, built nationwide road and utility infrastructure, and become the globe's economic superpower without a Dep't of Education. She still insisted we need it. I then told her to point at one person who would NOT have finished high school if the Dep't of Education didn't exist (a logical fallacy, I know - but I wanted to pin her down). Her response?
"Educating kids is not the purpose of the Dep't of Education."
I said, "Yeah, that's pretty obvious with the way education is in the crapper."

College is even worse in many ways 35 Reply- 1 y
This post is a lot of chest pounding that says very little, but it does make a case for your "lack of education" because you sound like the propaganda machine the USA wanted to you be. The Department of Education began operation in 1980 under the Reagan regime, and I do mean regime. He was responsible for much of the bullshit in the corporate tax structure and the downfall of higher education when he flipped the cost structure from states to individuals.
Along with Rockefeller's well known statement about " I don't want a nation of thinkers, I want a nation of workers", Reaganomics made higher education a thing for the wealthiest among us. The General Education Board, established in 1902, played a significant role in standardizing education across the nation, promoting a curriculum that emphasized conformity and rote memorization over creativity and critical thinking. This was easily done since Rockefeller and Carnegie controlled all the publications in public schools.
So you could argue that the D. O. E. has accomplished EXACTLY what it was created to do - create a nation of non-thinkers incapable of critical analytics, which is what this current regime took advantage of to win the election. The Dept of Ed "could and should" be important to the USA, but only if it cared about teaching people the truth.
PS > The US entering WWII helped turn the tide, but they didn't "win the war nor even make the greatest sacrifice in terms of troops. Like it or not, that distinction goes to our then ally, the Soviet Union. They suffered 11.4 MILLION casualties, while the USA had 446,000. Without the Soviet sacrifice, and yes, without US help, we'd all be speaking German right now. - 1 y
@loveslongnails
Agree with many of your points. I recommend reading Weapons Of Mass Instruction - John Taylor Gatto
I disagree with your take on the Soviets. They fought a bloody battle, no doubt, but Russian tactics have always been the same. Let 'General Frost' treat your enemies brutally.
It doesn't matter how many lives you throw away in a war, it's about how effective you are at taking/destroying or holding/denying strategic goals. Americans always were good at grandstanding, about being the greatest generation, best country in the world. For a while, it was true.

5.7K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. No, of course not. And there's good reason for the Department of Education.
First, various ignorant people here who are too young don't remember that there's been a "Department of Education" for a long time... even before it was a standalone department. 50 years ago, we had "HEW" which was the "Department of Health, Education, and Welfare". During the Carter Administration, "HEW" was split into the Department of Education ("ED") and the Department of Health and Human Services ("HHS"). (Also, created during that time, was the creation of the Department of Energy, but that's another story.)
Conservatives don't want ED because they don't want their kids "infected" with ideas they disagree with... like evolution instead of creationism. However, Congress, in the act of protecting America, has an interest in maintaining that the population is sufficiently educated. This is why there have been national education standards for generations.
Without ED, two things would happen: 1) racism and other anti-social behaviors (like rebellion) will rise and 2) ignorance will proliferate in those states with poor education standards; those states will suffer accordingly. Furthermore, other states would then also be affected since the damage from the ignorance cannot be isolated.

And out of everybody in politics I would think Trump would want our kids to be smart...
And I think Trump really should have thought about this one a little bit deeper
I'm sure all his kids have gotten a good education and his youngest son I'm sure Trump is going to do anything and everything he possibly can to be good this time because I will guarantee his son will run for president because Trump only has one term.
One of these days we all just have to stand up and say hey enough is enough
He has the opportunity of a lifetime twice to become the greatest president we've ever have had. I'm curious if he does it or if he gets to the very end and blows it RV does really good so his kid can run it right after him become the youngest we'll see I guess but with the kids know they need to know math they need to know everything they're not even disciplined.
With work ethics sorry I know that was a question lol. The most of your questions just get me thinking deep lol00 Reply
1 yNo. It will make education even more uneven and lower quality overall, and it is kids and their future that will suffer for it.
Education is like the police: the system is broken, but there is clearly a hole that it's trying to fill. You can't just "shut down" or "defund" it, you need to actually have a plan of what you're going to do instead. It's bad to have a nail in your arm, but it's much worse to take it out before even looking for a bandage to control the bleeding.

1 yI would conditionally support closing the Department of Education. I say conditionally for a few reasons. I don't know exactly what they do, but I know that the large majority of education is at the state and local level. I also know that the feds only provide a token amount of funding for K-12 education. They use the token funding so that politicians can say they are doing something, and also so the feds can have a certain amount of control over education.
I think the feds should stay the hell out of education. Keep it at the state and local level where it belongs. We don't need to be giving more power to politicians in far off Washington.
Education is highly politicized. If it's going to be politicized, at least keep it as local as possible so it's within reach, not in some far off land with politicians who barely remember where they came from,04 Reply- 1 y

If you are referring to the Department of Education, I'm pretty sure that's not true.
- 1 y
@WindAtMyBack
That was my guess, because I don’t know much about US government cause I live in Spain - 1 y
A little over half of their money goes to grants and loans to individual students, not to universities. The other half goes to help fund schools in low income school districts, and special education programs (which means kids with physical or mental disabilities).
Federal grants to research universities mostly come from whatever agency wants a particular research done. For example medical research might come from one of the health agencies. As far as I know, it comes directly from the agency and does not funnel through the Department of Education.
Education in the US is almost entirely at the state and local level. That's especially true for Kindergarten through high school level. In my school district funding is split roughly evenly between state and local sources. The state sets minimum graduation requirement. Local school can add to that. I'm guessing that they can't get too crazy in additional graduation requirements.
If the Department of Education is abolished that does not mean all the programs will be abolished. Potentially none of the programs would be abolished.

1 yI'm just gonna copy and paste what I said in the other
Some quotes of what trump said for the people that only read titles of articles
“I say it all the time, I’m dying to get back to do this. We will ultimately eliminate the federal Department of Education,” he said in September during a rally in Wisconsin.
“We will drain the government education swamp and stop the abuse of your taxpayer dollars to indoctrinate America’s youth with all sorts of things that you don’t want to have our youth hearing,” Trump said.
Personally I think this is a big issue in the education system, I would hope this also includes things that are messed up like not feeding someone's child cause they don't pay for lunch, I think if they are gonna be responsible for children they should feed them for the time they are responsible of them for.10 Reply - 6.3K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic.
1 yThe Department of Education (DoE) was started by Jimmy Carter almost 50 years ago, breaking it off from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW). Its goal is to coordinate educate among the various states. Over the years, that goal has been abandoned and instead it has gotten into feeding children, funding Title I teaching supplies, supporting woke teaching and other things that are not part of its charter.
Since its original charter is not being accomplished, and states and local areas have the best idea of teaching for its local area, why do we need the federal government involved? It's time for DoE to go.
Personally, I'd rather see my tax dollars go to funding my local school district, than to the federal government for funding activities that I don't believe in at other school districts.

@Juxtapose That argument proves nothing. By that logic, we won two world wars, built infrastructure, and became an economic superpower without the internet, modern medicine, or even interstate highways, so should we get rid of those too? Just because something didn’t exist at one point in history doesn’t mean it has no value.
And let’s be real, public education did exist before the Department of Education. The soldiers, engineers, and scientists who made those achievements possible weren’t self-taught in a vacuum. Federal programs like the GI Bill (1944) and the National Defense Education Act (1958) were massive investments in education that directly fueled America’s dominance. The DOE was created to improve and coordinate those efforts, not to "invent" education.
If you want to argue against the DOE, or say it needs to be better, fine, but at least come up with something better than “it wasn’t around in 1945.” That’s like saying we should get rid of indoor plumbing because the Roman Empire managed without it.

In reality the Department of Education is primarily a loan originator for student loans. People complain all the time about having to pay off student loans for degrees that have not landed them a career. The Department of Education sold them on the idea of that debt slavery. A regular bank would consider your career prospects and your current earnings before giving you a loan. So if you wanted to study underwater basket weaving and you never had a job before, they would say there isn't much of a market for those skills and you haven't shown you are a financially responsible adult yet, you are a high risk loan. We do not want to give you a loan to study underwater basket weaving, because you will probably end up working at Starbucks and never be able to pay us back. It's bad for us and it's bad for you. There is a glut of people trained in fields that have no work for them. Many of those people took student loans to get that education. Now they can't escape that debt trap and have no career prospects. That is all thanks to the Department of Education. Economies are local, and thus states and counties need to manage their education goals to create the workers they need for their local economies. Central governments are real bad at that.
