1 yI don’t because unfortunately not all states believe in facts therefore if we leave education up to the states kids in states likes Alabama or Virginia will be taught that evolution is a hoax and although I do believe that there may be a god I don’t think that schools should teach students to believe in stuff that they can’t prove or is open for belief.
08 Reply- 1 y
They aren’t taught that because they can’t teach that. Who’s to say that that won’t change after getting rid of the board of education. Alabama has tried many times to downplay evolution and push a religious agenda in schools
- 1 y
Do you have any sources to back up your claims? And since state DOEs determine curriculum, how do you conclude that eliminating the federal DOE, which does not determine what is taught in any state's public schools, going to lead to a state "teaching evolution is a hoax and pushing a religious agenda in schools".
Your comments display a naive faith in fellow leftists, a hatred of political opponents, and a lack of understanding of state and federal roles in K-12 education.

@goaded: I know you're a control freak because you're a Marxist, but you're reliably wrong about everything due to lies and misrepresentations and you have the bad Russian troll habit of relying on a single distorted data point as if it were some immutable proof that invalidates the many points countering your claims. Now you've admitted that you're reliably wrong not due to your own arguments but your dependence on a source you can't even properly name.
I do believe that @SmokinAces2000 is perfectly qualified to speak for himself and doesn't need some helicopter parent white man to rescue him. - 1 y
@Avicenna OK, ignore the trial that stopped TN from making it illegal for teachers to teach human evolution in any state-funded school. And the fact that Louisiana had to be sued to stop it requiring the ten commandments in every school from this year. And the order for 55,000 Trump bibles by Oklahoma's State Superintendent.
@SmokinAces2000 can talk for himself, I just point out lies at random. It's not my fault you put them here.

Guess what- people won't want to teach in poorly performing Title I schools if their salary is going to be docked because they teach kids who have tough situations at home and usually don't do as well on standardized tests.
36 Reply- 1 y
I didn’t think about that. Why would teachers want to work in under performing schools
- 1 y
There are a number of reasons why they do now, but certainly won't if they are told a portion of their pay will be determined by whether students come to school and study for standardized tests. It will also discourage teachers from helping each other by sharing techniques and methods because they will be in competition with each other rather than cooperating for better outcomes. In most places, teacher pay is poor and teachers don't receive the respect they deserve as professionals.

I guess merit will have to factor in the difficulty of the individuals and pay bonuses, like hazard pay in the military. Frankly, we have that issue in our town... difficult to staff the school in the problem areas. All of the problems are rooted in home life.

@lightbulb27: Alabama has done that with extra pay for some science and math teachers.

That said, merit based teacher pay sounds like a good idea on paper, but that will actually screw over a lot of the teachers in crappier districts that are trying to turn things around, encouraging them to move elsewhere. This is where letting the states decide how to deal with this is important, because what works for Rhode Island isn't necessarily going to work for Texas, where all four of the major metroplexes plus El Paso are distinctly different, and so it would be sensible to send it down even further.

1 yThe merit based pay would be impossible to implement fairly. That's a stupid idea from people with problems thinking the idea through.
But eliminating the Federal DOE and ALL of the funding it provides to states is a fantastic idea. Kentucky and Tennessee have already started squealing about the funds they are gonna lose. But all the dirt poor rural Red States with paltry state revenue are gonna get absolutely screwed.
Bring on the ignorance and poverty. Make another generation of kids from these states unemployable. Let's stop dumping taxpayer money into states that hate education. Let them have their private Jesus schools and home schooling to pair up with their private "for profit" prisons and "guns for all" open carry laws.

Anonymous(18-24)1 yDepartment of Education is important for children’s education & to make sure all schools get proper funding / care they need to leave a positive impact on young minds.
To base teacher pay on merit is another stupid idea, we should raise the minimum wage for teachers to $25 an hour while also placing our trust into a system where any US Citizen can apply for teacher roles / faculty / aide so that while they get experience as those, they can go back for education online or in person to get a better degree then lead to better pay $40 an hour. When you treat teaching staff like crap from Karen parents and the pay isn’t that good, they will leave.

Anonymous(36-45)1 yNot that either of them are achievable via the presidency, if he were to use the tools available they would be mutually excursive goals.
Trump can cripple the department of education as he should, and encourage states to find ways to make teacher pay based upon merit. But in reality as mere would really be a reflection of the financial success of the students they teach. The teacher pay can not be soo directly based. Instead a proxy like standardized test scores would have to be used by an institution.
The institution itself would then need to be paid over the long run based upon said merits, perhaps by claiming a share of the student's income.

Anything President Trump does will be an improvement.
Sending the funding directly to the states without interference from the teachers union will get rid of DEI and other indoctrination vehicles that out kids are subject to. School Choice will allow more options for parents and giving public schools some competition will make them step up their game.00 Reply- 6K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic.
1 yMerit pay? Are you out of your mind? Do politicians work on merit pay? Government officials? Hell no. You can't force kids to learn. Besides, American history as it is taught today is nothing but a bunch of lies anyway. Where's the "merit" in getting kids to memorize and regurgitate that?
00 Reply 2.5K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. I agree with eliminating the DOE at the federal level and handing it over to the states. Although I think it should go even further down, to the county level... due to all the "blue" states, who's governors would continue all their bad educational policies
00 ReplyTeachers are obsolete, teachers' salaries should be set by demand and supply, that is, teachers' salaries should be low, in my country teachers' salaries are set by the government, and they earn high salaries without doing anything.

I agree it’s a good resource but so were books. We still needed teachers to start us off.
