1 ySo I was explained by my Nigerian friend why such a trend is a thing.
It comes from the expectations of men in the old days that a proper woman should have non black hair, well straightened and at the time they didn't view curly hair that were black as attractive or "considered" well maintained.
Additionally the traditional braids that is their normal curly hair with added hair was seen as 'lower class' and 'dirty'. So to blend in with society as a time and be employed like other women; black women embraced wigs and it eventually became a cultural thing.
That is why you generally see either wigs or those braids on them, that is their culturally favourite hair styles.
Similar to how rockers preffer longer hair,
Western women straightened hair, etc...20 Reply

1 yIt's because they have shitty ass hair that starts breaking apart when it gets to a certain length or it looks like out of control pubes unless they grease the shit out of it down to moisturize it and weigh it down.

Oh hell naw!!! 00 Reply
1 yIt probably has to do with a eurocentric beauty standard in the cosmetic industry, encouraging a lot of POC women with curly hair to straighten it either via chemicals or in a slightly less harmful way via a wig.

1 yCompared to people of other races, our hair is unique. Not only is our hair a thicker texture, but it also grows naturally curly, which makes it appear as what people know as an "afro" after reaching a certain length. Additionally, we live in a society where women are seen as more attractive if their hair is straight and long, and employers, schools, government institutions, etc. often deem natural Black hairstyles as "unprofessional." Because of that, any claim that Black women wear wigs because of "cultural appropriation" is wild.
For example, many employers, some schools, and government institutions such as the military consider afros "unprofessional" despite afros technically not being a "style," but rather the natural, default way Black hair grows out the scalp. As a result, to appear more presentable, either to appeal to beauty standards or comply with professional and academic policies, some Black women wear wigs. Thus, even if a Black woman wanted to accept her natural hair and flaunt it, depending on her job or school, she might not be able to do so.
Straightening the natural hair is an option, but because of the various chemicals and heat involved, the hair becomes prone to breakage in the process. As a result, when attempting to conform to society's beauty standards for whatever reason by applying such heat and chemicals, the end result is often not very presentable looking. Of course, afro-textured hair definitely can grow long and healthy, but doing so requires a lot of work, care, and protection compared to people with straighter, thinner textures.
For instance, care often involves taking the right type of vitamins, washing with filtered water, protecting the hair from harmful sun rays (which contributes to breakage), and so on. More often than not, wearing a wig (or bonnet) is the best way to protect the hair from breakage. Some Black women simply prefer to skip the hassle and opt for wigs. However, don't automatically assume that every Black woman is wearing a wig. Sometimes, Black women's real hair could be long and straight, which is often mistaken for a wig.
The easiest way to grow our hair long without much effort and extra care is to twist it into dreadlocks, which many Black women do. However, this is not always an option for many Black women because it is often still considered "unprofessional." Many Black women also wear wigs for style purposes. It is simply an easy way to wear any desired style and/or color while still protecting the natural hair from harm.

1 ybecause they're culturally appropirating white people. but don't tell any of the DEI idiots. they'll struggle to explain that cause they would have to tell black people that something they do is bad and they just can't manage to do that.

Wdym?

i said exactly what i mean xD i didn't "mean" anything besides what i litterally said. or was something i said not understandable? I don't know how to answer your question xD
- 1 y
Some black people can be born with natural straight hair so it’s not cultural appropriation
- 1 y
@SmokinAces2000 it absolutely is cultural appropriation. cause they're litterally are trying to fit in with all the straight haired white people. there's genetic varians and some ethnic Africans may have longer waves but they don't have straight hair. and even if like 1% of them did, it would still be cultural appropriation. cause that's the same way they use it when white people do anything that might even remotely be associated with black culture. even with the braids which litterally the northern europeans did first and not the Africans. so you sir have no argument.
- 1 y
i take it you're not very old, cause when i was like 15 or so they litterally advertised straight hair for black people as a way to "be less black" cause back then people were still racist as fuck. so there's no argument to be made that it's not cultural appropriation if we apply the same standard for every "cultural appropriation". we could agree on the fact that this entire pseudo political correctness that came up with "cultural appropriation" is complete bullshit. but not on the fact that black people wearing straight haired wigs is not exactly that.
- 1 y
I never said that white people wearing braids is cultural appropriation because I don’t believe that but neither is black women wearing wigs
- 1 y
Most groups outside of a few have straight hair, also... While I can get the sentiment, straight hair is just a hair type and not apart of a culture.. But I don't care for the whole cultural appropriation argument as a whole.. It was silly from day one.
- 1 y
There are afro kinky wigs not just straight wigs and white people aren't the only ones with straight hair.
- 1 y
@SmokinAces2000 thank you
- 1 y
What's wrong with trying to fit in? If they weren't trying to fit in you would still complain so shut up.
- 1 y
@SmokinAces2000 if you don't believe in cultural appropriation at all, I agree with that. But it's a common topic of discussion in the public realm either way.
- 1 y
@Joshydavid25 yeah it is a bullshit argument but at least in the media, people are talking about it and nobody seems to dare to just call that bullshit out
- 1 y
@Axxxlavxa but either way it is definitely an attempt to fit in and look more like certain cultural norms seem to dictate. Maybe for some it's just for variety of style but yeah.
1 yIt’s not racist it’s just their hair. Their hair is a lot higher maintenance as well as if they want straight hair it’s a lot harder to maintain it. Some also don’t prefer the natural look.
How someone chooses to wear their hair is a personal choice each person has to make. People should do what makes them feel happy though not what the world wants because people judge no matter what you do.

1 yUnfortunately, unless you keep it in some sort of longterm protective style and let it grow, kinky hair is not the easiest to deal with. And a lot of "Black" women with kinky hair don't really know how to deal with it and make presentable, so wigs are an easy alternative.. I personally hate wigs, especially the front with front lace.. I honestly think locs, a weave style, or even just a nice scarf over a protective style is much better than a damn wig..

We don't have to we choose to. Many of us rock our natural hair or choose to get it braided.
2.5K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Because their hair is very hard to style. They just have tight, frizzy hair. It just curls up into an afro so it’s easier to just get a wig instead of having it straightened or braided etc.

1 yI've asked come of my black friends about thos in the past. It's because of how tight their cornrow braids are, that they pull hair at the roots causing balding in some. I personally think they should let the fro flow free. Let it do what it naturally do.

1 yTheir hair is harder to work with so they use wigs to not put so much effort or so they don't damage their hair somehow I think

1 yHave you seen a black woman first thing in the morning? Unfortunately for me I've passed out before settling with a few ladies of the night that were of the dark continent. There is nothing more off putting then the site of a wigless negress breaking fast in the morning light.

1 yTBH I have no idea and didn't know they did but would have to assume cause looking after any hair is difficult and expensive and wigs are a lot cheaper
00 Reply12.1K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. The same reason White, Jewish and others do. It's a style and charm to it. But rather than wait months and years to grow their hair to it, they can just wear a wig.
00 Reply12K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Their hair breaks off too easily.
It grows slowly.
Its hard to style.
12 Reply- 1 y
It actually grows the same as any other hair type, it just coils and shrinks up.. Which is why anybody who sports an afro combs it out.. Also one of the perks of kinky hair is that it's very easy to style especially if it's thick..

@Joshydavid25. As you wish.
