If you look at Russias movements in Ukraine both before and after the invasion it is clear that they actually had other plans for Ukraine than invading it. They did it because they had to, not because they wanted to. And why did they have to? Because time was running out and the window where they could act was closing as USA transitioned away from Trumps ineffective government to Bidens as well as Ukraine moving towards joining the EU and NATO.

The way Russia prefers to do this is not through invasions. They much rather undermine the Ukrainian government and manipulate their elections to elect another puppet president like the previous Ukrainian government or the Belarus government. Far less costly and much smoother diplomatic annexation in the future.
