Can Ukraine survive as a country without Donetsk region?

It would appear the breakdown is over letting go of some parts of Ukraine in exchange for security guarantees. Putin at minimum wants Donetsk and a few other regions and this is primarily where the oil resources are located.

Question is, could Ukraine survive if they gave up such region and it's resources for energy? The problem quickly becomes viability.

I'm sure some would argue, Putin wants all of it. He may... he had control of it before it shifted west. But he might settle for a chunk of it, the Russian cultural areas, which is most of what he's demanding right now.

Anything else... keeps creeping towards Euorpean WWIII which eventually draws in the USA.
