They can say it's because of Trump all they want; the real reason is because they can't afford it. As it stands, the entire Portuguese Air Force only has about two dozen F-16s (roughly equal to Block 50 generation) and no other modern fighters. This means that their alternatives are: 1. Buy more F-16s, which are American... 2. Buy other American jets... 3. Buy Russian-made jets, which would be hilariously stupid on their part. 4. Buy EF2000s, which are in the process of being replaced by a new German fighter, which is also an option... Except it's going way over budget and probably won't be attainable by most European countries. 5. Buy nothing and continue to be a leech on stronger countries for an already pitiful defense capability.

It's understandable. Other nations have changed their commitments to buy F-35s as well even before Trump. However, Trump is a douchebag and other countries don't need to reward him or the American people for electing him. Dictators have a longer history in Europe than here and support for any dictator - like Trump wants to be - is something Europeans generally would not do now in the wake of WW2.

it's a fair issue as they need training and parts... if they PO the leader, would they get cut off. hopefully it helps the leaders of USA think more carefully about their communications.

  Fun fact it will impact domestic cost of our own military. If globally isolated we won't be able to afford our own military. Make a few thousand parts is more expensive then a million parts per part.
