I don’t think anyone believed they’re on the side of the oppressor, everyone thinks they’re on the side of the oppressed because no one wants to be the villain in someone else’s story, or even their own. And those who say they are on the side of the oppressor do so with a tongue-in-cheek attitude that they would carry as if you asked them if they would work for a fictional villain. They don’t see the consequences of their supportive actions as consequences, only achievements.
