It depends.
Honestly, I like to talk about those things and there's little taboo for me. That said, once I was consoling someone claiming they wanted to die because their spouse left them. We were in my grandfather's house, where I still have his rifles.
So I went to fetch one of the rifles and asked them, why don't do that now? They hesitated so I told them I'd shoot them myself if they did not. They then said they actually wanted to live and never mentioned being suicidal ever again.
And this is how I saved a life.
There's two things that need a lot more public discussion. One is mental health and any stigma about it removed. The other is salaries. The more you exchange information with coworkers over earnings the more armed you'll be for demanding a raise.
Seeking a professional is best: the average person could give insensitive and damaging advice unknowingly.

Not taboo choose who is told wisely though. I have told plenty of people lots of things over the years and lets just say you really find out who your friends are and who are not so good friends after all.
In saying that though I have picked up an awesome circle of friends by just opening up to one particular friend and now I have solid meaningful friendships that I can tell anything to. It also goes both ways, I'm there for them if they need me too.
