Why do Democrats govern the largest cities in the US?

Of the 50 largest cities in the United States, the mayor is a Democrat in 39 cities, while there are 8 Republican mayors and 3 Independent mayors (2 elected with Democratic support).

This means that 82% of the 50 largest cities are managed by Democrats.

Of the top 10 largest cities, all have Democratic mayors, the lone exception is the 9th largest city (Dallas) with a Republican mayor.

Cities just tend to be liberal. They use a lot of public infrastructure to function, which is generally the democratic wheelhouse. They are tend to be highly diverse, so politics dependent on homogenous culture and values tend to struggle. (For example, the current stance of the republican party associating itself to a variant "christian" values doesn't really hold as much value when less of the population is christian or considers their christian values to be different than that being express by the party.)

Cities are all about redistribution and what you can get out of someone else. It becomes "social" becuase there's so many people. nyc for exapmle is the most social unsocial place I've seen. people are close together such that they totally ignore youe xist... but the govt is taking fromt hose that work to give to the others.

with fewer humans and more spread out, you have to be more self reliant. the rules change.

But to answer your question, I don't know. That's a very good question. Same like why college students/professors are liberal.

I can only speculate that it's because bigger cities have less blue collar jobs and White collar people tend to be more Liberal.
