I think that a lot of people especially in the US are actually sycophants when they think that they're patriots.

Nah.

The former are people caught up in their own insecurities.

The latter are (kind of) gold diggers.

But admitted: in both cases these are people with a distorted perception of reality.

A patriot is someone who has a strong love, devotion, and loyalty to their country. A sycophant is a person who acts obsequiously towards someone or people in general to gain advantage.
