Canada WEXIT, how likely is it?

WEXIT (Western Canada Exit) is an initiative by several Canadian provinces in the western part of the country, to consider becoming independent. In particular, Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia have had joint meetings to consider leaving Canada. Alberta, in particular, may soon have its citizens vote on an independence referendum.

There are many stories about this. Here's one from CBC, Canada's major broadcast network:

What do you think? Is this a real possibility? Or are the western provinces just trying to get Ottawa (Canada's capital) to pay more attention to them?

FYI... About 65% of Canadians live in the east (mostly Quebec and Ontario), which is one of the reasons why Canadian federal government in Ottawa (also in the east) pays more attention to the eastern provinces than to the western provinces.

I think it's Alberta, mostly. They put all of their eggs in the same basket two decades ago by developping the oil sands industry as if petroleum were to remain the world's no.1 energy source for centuries to come.

They knew back then that it's an unsustainable industry that will slowly die in the next decades. They took that stupid decision anyway. They stupidly expected everyone to ignore global warming.

Now they're mad at Quebec because we won't allow them to build a fucking pipeline passing on our province's territory to ship out their shit from the Atlantic coast.

The prairie provinces truly are Canada's equivalent of the Deep South. In Alberta, they once had eugenics laws to castrate the disabled and "mentally deficient". The only chapter of the KKK to exist in Canada was in Saskatchewan. The conservative party or Canada and its leader are from there.

There's zero chance of it happening. I live in Alberta and there a some issues that need to get sorted out and this is to bring attention to it. Once its resolved, we'll all be happy again.

I don't know much about Canada but I do know about these type of referendums. They always seem to be pushed through by a vocal minority and get treated as a protest vote against the sitting government rather than people looking at the long term pros and cons.

If you take Scotland as an example, there's more people living in London than the whole of Scotland so guess who the government prioritises? I'm guessing it's the same in Canada with outlining places feeling marginalised.

Will they break? Nah, same as Scotland. You'll get a few isolationist who want freedom to marry their hamster or are still holding a grudge from 1800 but most won't want the upheaval and uncertainty..

I think it's stupid as hell. Right now Canada like the USA spans a continent and has access to the Atlantic (Europe and Africa) and the Pacific (Asia and Australia) via deep water harbors on both coasts. They would only get weaker as 2 smaller countries.

This is just the selfish pricks with the food production and oil reserves trying to loot the country and run. As if a decision to make your residence in Alberta or BC somehow gives you the sole rights to its natural resources and disenfranchises every other Canadian citizen. This is MAGA thinking spreading like a cancer into our northern neighbor. Is there a tariff on imported Fascism in Canada? Should there be?

My guess is the latter. Something like this would need to be ratified by not only the other provinces, but also the federal Canadian gov. and there's no way Canada will agree to lose 4 provinces. Quebec didn't even get independence

I understand the reasons and I support it, especially Alberta and Saskatchewan. I'd be concerned that BC would be lefty like Cal, Wash. and Oregon. I don't know about Manitoba I'd like Trump to invite all of them..

As likely as Quebec's perpetual threats to leave Canada, that is, not very likely.(Though I'd take the Prairies Provinces' threat to leave more seriously than Quebec's, as the West is our breadbasket, supplying us most of our grub. While we're at it, perhaps we 1,750,000 black Canadians should leave and join the 50,000,000 African Americans. That would make MUCH MORE sense than Quebec's eight million or so population rabbiting.)
