2.8K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. I don't understand US gov't shutdowns since I'm a commonwealth person. Obviously funding stops if appropriate bills aren't passed.
Do tax deductions from wages/salaries stop and are tax payers happy and joyful as a result?
In a Commonwealth country if appropriation bills aren't passed it means the gov't has fallen and fresh elections will be held. But once election writs are issued then appropriation bills are passed without dissent.
In the US is it serious and traumatic or is it a bit of political theatre and an opportunity for politicians to posture?

9 moDems want healthcare for illegal immigrants and funding for trans kids... so they're shutting it down. The in fighting on the Dems side about this already signals they'll fold... especially when citizens start asking WTF?
I know they hate Trump and so does a lot of their voters, but c'mon... illegals and trans kids is the hill they're going to die on to be anti-Trump... it's simply not going to work.
Meanwhile, this is the perfect opportunity to cut more government jobs that are pointless... thanks Dems!

Oh and the article you posted (yeah I finally clicked it), this is how you read through their lies. Start at the end of the article and read it from there. They always stuff what they're trying to hide in the back end. Try it for a couple weeks, trust me, it works. They have to put the info in the article, but if you just go to the end, it cuts through most of their bullshit. ALWAYS READ THEIR ARTICLES FROM THE BACK FIRST. ... Opinion Owner9 mo@goaded Are you truly uninformed, or just dishonest?
You are technically correct in a sense, as of right now, but democrats want too repeal portions of the bill already passed, and they are holding Americans hostage by way of the government shutdown in order to ensure illegal immigrants WOULD receive healthcare benefits funded by American taxpayers and cost shifting by American hospitals and ERs. Please read the two links below and tell me which part (s) you believe are untrue, and why. Please be specific.

This is one of these "we have videos of people not hitting police on Jan 6, so no police were hit on Jan 6" arguments, isn't it?
"If the Republican-controlled Congress does not extend Affordable Care Act enhanced subsidies before they expire at the end of this year, enrollees will have to pay more.
A KFF analysis of federal data found that the average increase in out-of-pocket coverage cost for enrollees would be 79 percent, with state-by-state average increases ranging from 49 percent to 195 percent."
"An analysis by the Century Foundation, a progressive think tank, found that out-of-pocket insurance costs would increase on average in rural counties from $713 to $1,473 – a 107 percent increase, or slightly more than a doubling."
www.aljazeera.com/.../fact-check-us-2025-government-shutdown-talking-points - 9 mo
Oh, and from your FINAL link , "This would result in the federal government spending nearly $200 billion on healthcare for illegal immigrants and non-citizens over the next decade" could mean $0 on illegal immigrants and $200billion (sure!) on legally resident non-citizens.
That's the kind of misdirection and lies we expect from this administration.
Opinion Owner9 mo@goaded Okay, since you are clearly unwilling to put in the effort to educate yourself, I will make it super simple for you. If you dispute any of the below objective facts, provide the evidence to support your position. Otherwise, bugger off.
Spending to cover emergency healthcare and child delivery costs for undocumented immigrants through Emergency Medicaid under the ACA was $3.8 billion in fiscal year (FY) 2023.
Before the OBBBA, the federal government was required under Emergency Medicaid laws that are part of the ACA to reimburse hospitals for those expenses for illegal immigrants at a higher rate than citizens. To address emergency care costs, Section 71110 of OBBBA reduces the FMAP from 90 percent to the state’s normal FMAP for emergency medical services provided through Medicaid for unauthorized immigrants—effective October 1, 2026. This section does not eliminate Medicaid funding emergency services for unauthorized immigrants. It simply ensures the federal match for unauthorized immigrants does not exceed that for citizens.
Democrats want to roll back those changes so that illegal immigrant emercency and child delivery services can be funded at a higher rates for illegal immigrants than for US citizens. That means democrats want the government to fund healthcare for illegal immigrants, exactly as Trump and Vance have said.
Fact: Democrats are lying by conflating "coverage" and "funding", and very dishonestly so, so that people like you who can't think for themselves will believe the republicans are lying.- 9 mo
OK, your first one in a second, but first: are ACA prices going to double for 22 million Americans because Republicans are willing to let enhanced subsidies expire in 2026, or not? (They are, see below.) Remember, my initial point was "0% of ACA subsidies go to illegal immigrants". You don't think saving 22 million American citizens from their health care plans doubling in price is a worthwhile demand from the Democrats? That's why "democrats-shut-down-government-over-free-healthcare-for-illegals" is a total lie.
I should disprove "Spending to cover emergency healthcare and child delivery costs for undocumented immigrants through Emergency Medicaid under the ACA was $3.8 billion in fiscal year (FY) 2023."?
Firstly, it's not $3.8bn just for undocumented immigrants (some legally present, too), and, secondly, someone else would have to fund the legally required care otherwise.
"This includes undocumented immigrants ***as well as*** some lawfully present immigrants who are still within the five-year waiting period for regular Medicaid... ***only 0.4%*** of the total Medicaid spending nationwide... Without this funding mechanism, the costs for this ***legally required emergency care*** would likely fall entirely on hospitals (as uncompensated care) or state and local governments."
govfacts.org/.../
" Health insurance premiums for plans bought over the Affordable Care Act marketplace will increase 114% on average if enhanced subsidies expire at year's end, according to an analysis by KFF, a nonpartisan health policy research group.
Democrats are pushing to extend the enhanced "premium tax credits" as part of a deal to avert a government shutdown Wednesday.
About 22 million people receive enhanced subsidies."
www.cnbc.com/.../...ithout-enhanced-subsidies.html
Like I said before, making a few correct statements is like showing video of police not being attacked to prove police were not attacked.
Opinion Owner9 mo@goaded So much bullshit to deflect from my original point, and your original response. Trump and Vance said democrats want to continue funding healthcare for illegal aliens. Schumer and Jeffries said that was a lie. It wasn't. Your original response was that 0% of ACA subsidies go to illegal immigrants, by law. You're doing just what Schumer and Jeffries are doing, which is extremely dishonest. $ billions have been going to pay for healthcare for illegals, and the BBB changes that. That's a fact, and the dems are lying about it. I'm not wasting any more time here arguing with someone bent on lying and deflecting. Buh bye now.
- 9 mo
Projection. My original response: "0% of ACA subsidies go to illegal immigrants" is still true. 22 million Americans use them and will face doubled premiums from next year if the Republicans won't negotiate. The lie from you, "Trump and Vance" is the claim that's nothing to do with the Democrat's position and they're all about handouts to illegal aliens.
Secondly, the cost of ***legally required healthcare*** for anyone in the country has to be provided by someone (hospitals or local governments if not the federal government). It's not saving money not to have the federal government provide it, but burdening poorer states and hospitals.
That amount, even including legally resident non-citizens by the way, is less than 20% of what Trump is sending to Argentina to bolster their right-wing leader. It's not like you don't have the money, it's a choice.
Wait for it... Fox News regurgitation coming. Let me guess, it's for immigrants, it's the dems fault, Q said so etc etc SMH. They all need to read/watch from a real source not Fox News. And real is the AP/Reuters of the world.
