I don't understand US gov't shutdowns since I'm a commonwealth person. Obviously funding stops if appropriate bills aren't passed.

Do tax deductions from wages/salaries stop and are tax payers happy and joyful as a result?

In a Commonwealth country if appropriation bills aren't passed it means the gov't has fallen and fresh elections will be held. But once election writs are issued then appropriation bills are passed without dissent.

In the US is it serious and traumatic or is it a bit of political theatre and an opportunity for politicians to posture?
