Who do you think is responsible for the US Government Shutdown?

Question

In case you are unaware, the US Government shutdown at midnight AM on 1 October 2025. The Senate failed to have the 60 votes necessary to pass a budget bill that was already approved by the Democrats and Republicans in the House. In the Senate, all Republicans voted for the budget bill while only a few Democrats did, falling short of the needed 60 votes.

Please vote in the poll with who you believe is responsible for the shutdown, and add your reasoning in an opinion, if you want.

Note that the order of items in the poll is purely alphabetical.

This could not happen until the 1980's when some policy changes made it necessary (so says the law) to pass a budget in order to keep spending money, which for a nation seems a bit daft to me. That said Republicans control the presidency, senate, house and I might say the supreme court as well. Many will say this puts them at fault automatically. It's true Dems want the ACA reauthorized and while MAGAt mouthpiece Mike Johnson claims Dems refuse to come to the table Jeffries and Schumer have offered a public discussion. He evades this offer claiming that tey can negotiate that bit later. Based on recent Repub behavior, that would be a lie. I say good on the Dems for finally making a small stand against the thugs.

The American people are responsible. They all have their hands out wanting more more more. If they stopped wanting everything handed to them there would never be a shutdown.

Whether people want to admit it or not, Congress is us. They are the same mix that we are. They disagree and argue about the same things we do. That's because they are us.

At least you used a neutral word like responsible, rather than a loaded word like blame.

Personally I love shut downs and hope it goes on for a long long time.

I believe it's the Republicans because Trump didn't get every single thing he wanted to in his Big Beautiful Bill so he is fighting for the things he didn't get.

But I believe the Democrats are responsible because they want the illegal aliens to still spend 🇺🇸 Americans hard earned taxpayer dollars to pay for their medical expenses - which is billions of 💸 dollars! I am totally against that. They all got put on free Medicaid when Biden let them in America.

To me it looks like the systems at fault. It seems illogical that a few people can cause massive disruption to public services and cause hardship to thousands of workers. I know bills need approving but surely there should be something in place to keep things going.

The GOP is 100% responsible the shutdown and here's why:

* Every talking point they bring up is a lie, yet they continue to assert them the same way they asserted the 2020 election was rigged when they KNEW it wasn't. This time, the idiots keep pushing the LIE that the Dems want to add $1.4 trillion to the deficit for aid to undocumented immigrants. Let's break that down:

1) They're ineligible for aid. Repeat after me, magats: BY LAW, undocumented workers are NOT ELIGIBLE for Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, food stamps or Obamacare. That's the LAW. Repeat it again so it sinks into your daf heads because it hasn't yet. The only thing they're eligible for is emergency treatment at hospitals, like anyone else is. So STOP LYING.

2) The GOP has already added FOUR TRILLION DOLLARS

Your first update is incorrect: The Democrats want to extend the subsidies first passed in 2021, which expanded the payments offered under the existing ACA, or Obamacare. Republicans all voted against it, of course.

The deadline might have been a dare to Republicans: go ahead and vote to double or more health care payments for 20+ million Americans, many (if not most) of them your own voters.

Even Marjorie Taylor Greene wants them to be extended. But Johnson won't allow the House to convene because then he'd finally have to swear in the recently elected representative who would be the key vote needed to force a House vote on releasing the Epstein files.

The democrats are responsible for the shutdown. They want free healthcare for illegals. They’re holding the government hostage until they get what they want. President Trump isn’t the leader of the Democrat party he can’t easily convince democrats to vote on a Republican bill to open the government. So just because republicans have the White House, and Congress doesn’t mean they’re at fault when they need democrats to vote yes in order to reach the necessary 60 vote count needed and democrats are the ones refusing.

The GOP has both houses of Congress, SCOTUS majority, and the POTUS. Their inability to pass anything is because they feel like they don't need to negotiate. At the rate they're going, there's going to be a huge shift in the legislative branch after the 2026 election. Vance is still relatively clean, but that might change by the time the 2028 election comes around.

It was a continuing resolution on a budget passed under Biden. They need 60 votes to pass. All Republicans voted for Bidens budget, only 4 Democrats did... even though all of them voted for the exact same budget last year. Thats the facts. Thats who is responsible.
