Is there a moral equivalence between abortion and the death penalty? Or, for that matter, immigration, climate change, or other such matters? If so, what is it?
A few weeks ago, Pope Leo XIV made this statement while weighing in on a controversy involving Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago and Senator Dick Durbin...

Long story short, I can and do - in good faith and conscience - disagree with this statement, as do many previous popes, saints, and moral theologians and philosophers.
For one thing, the object, moral weight, and circumstances are not the same. And for another, quite simply, 99 times out of 100, you will not hear the language reversed from supporters of this way of thinking, often called the "seamless garment theory" or "consistent life ethic"; here's an article about the latter point.
But maybe I'm wrong? What is the moral equivalence between abortion and other issues?
