Staten Island is one of five boroughs in New York City. It is renewing its bid to secede from the rest of New York City, following Zohran Mamdani's election as the next mayor of New York City (NYC).

The borough of Staten Island is largely Republican and conservative, in contrast to NYC's other four boroughs that are highly Democrat and liberal.

Interestingly, the Democrats who rule New York City may not object to Staten Island leaving New York City, since it would further strengthen the Democratic base in New York City and make its liberal and socialist policies easier to implement.

FYI, if Staten Island seceded, it would simply become another county within New York State, making 58 independent counties that are not part of NYC.

On January 1, 1898, Staten Island was consolidated into Greater New York City, becoming its fifth borough. Residents had voted in favor of consolidation in 1894, hoping to gain economic benefits from the new city. Despite the vote, some Staten Islanders were immediately concerned about the balance of benefits and contributions, leading to early movements to secede from the city.

Consolidation process

Voter approval: In a referendum on November 6, 1894, a majority of Staten Island residents voted to become part of the new "Greater New York".

Official date: The consolidation took effect on January 1, 1898, at which point the separate towns on Staten Island were dissolved and became part of the City of Greater New York.

Borough designation: The island became the Borough of Richmond, which was later renamed the Borough of Staten Island in 1975.

Early impact and discontent

Lack of connection: Staten Island remained physically separate from the rest of the city, connected only by the Staten Island Ferry, which charged a five-cent fare.

Secession movements: Almost immediately after consolidation, some residents began to advocate for secession, believing the borough was not receiving its fair share of the city's resources.

Early efforts to secede: Local officials introduced bills to allow a secession vote as early as 1900 and as late as 1993.

They should secede. Mamdani is no doubt meeting with Newsom to find out how he and his ilk have manipulated elections for so long. So even if reasonable moderates and conservatives stay to fight the good fight for democracy and capitalism, they will eventually lose. The first thing to become a thing of the past under every previous socialist state was free and fair elections. There’s no point in playing a rigged game unless it’s rigged in your favor.
