Being multilingual means that you are smarter than average. In that sense, intelligence and knowledge are strength.
Being able to read great books in their original language can increase your knowledge.
And being able to interact with others helps to better understand and appreciate their cultures. The world is a big place.
It makes you better informed, sophisticated, worldly and cosmopolitan. Knowledge of other people and cultures makes you less provincial and bigoted.
Mark Twain said, "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness." I would say the same thing about being multilingual.
I guess it's possible that speaking the language of a country you are visiting might get you out of trouble in some circumstances. But, regardless, it sure would make it easier when you are traveling and possibly increase your overall experience.20 Reply

2.6K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Interesting question. Language embeds culture, ways of thinking and attitude I think. As an English only speaker I can't really know. I also don't know what is meant by stronger. The definition of stronger given doesn't help me
There is all this shit about strong women that I really don't have any sense of what they are on about. There is certainly a feminist English language that is meaningless to me and something like ads - to be uninterested in and ignored.
Basically i can't see how it makes people ethereally stronger.
More nuanced I could see and that might help in navigating life and making better decisions.00 Reply

6 moI'm not sure if strong is the word I'd use but it prolly makes you more knowledgeable which certainly has its advantages over ignorance.
Tho sometimes 2 languages can be difficult 'cuz , like, I live close to the Canadian border so people around these parts often speak both French and English but they often mix them all together in the same sentence so no one can understand anything they're saying.

It's called code switching, you'll hear it in any bilingual area. Quite often people will create new words mid conversation and magically every one understands or at least pretends too. Kids do it really naturally and it drives teachers nuts.
2K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Not necessarily. English is prevalent in most countries and it's the language I speak.
The problem that I am experiencing is the people who are delivering people delivering what I buy on Amazon don't speak a lick of English. So, do I have the problem or do they?11 Reply

5 moThat's a very unusual definition of "stronger", to be honest. I'd say it's more like "more capable". Knowing multiple languages does not make me physically stronger, it does not make me stronger in a fight, but it does give me an advantage if I have to go on the run... From a potential war, for example. That's literally why I have so many open courses on Duolingo at the moment that it's becoming hard for me to pick one to focus on every day. 😆

5 moNo I was was born speaking Spanish in Mexico in an extra ignorant family over there. Been legally here in California since 1995. You need wayy more than two languages spto survive here in this world we live in. I can tell you that right now if I was someone else I would of taken myself out years ago but poor ( scary Eduardo) says nono you keep fighting till the end, that is the only choice 😢.

It opens so many doors for learning and discerning things
As well as allows you to navigate more parts of the world
We often say “everyone speaks English” but anyone who’s travelled around knows that’s not really the case in a lot of places
Languages are a net positive in our lives10 Reply
6 moI wouldn't say it makes you stronger, but I don't think anyone would argue that it isn't a useful skill to be able to speak multiple languages. I guess that's the surface level response.
Maybe if we take circumstances into consideration the statement could be true. If one takes time to adamantly learn a new language especially later in life it could definitely build strength of character.

6 moIt's a nice talent to have but i think this kind of thing depends on your location. in huge countries like the U. S. probably not. in smaller ones like in Europe yeah you are likely in a much better position learning multiple languages.
Also it's something to put on a resume to increase your job prospects.

6 moStronger? Not sure if that's the word, but having another skill is never a bad thing. Knowing another language can help you network and increase your chances of getting opportunities

It makes you sharper, not just smarter.20 Reply- 6.2K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic.
5 moNot stronger, but more considerate and understanding of others. I've traveled a lot, to many other countries, and locals almost always appreciate me trying to talk to them in their language. Not everyone in the world speaks English.

No, I think it's one useful skill that some people have and others don't. Like creating music, or visualising objects, or making logical connections.

11 Reply1.1K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. I'd say it makes one more adaptable but it depends a lot on the language in question though I know one person who got a high paying job over other candidates because she is fluent in three languages.
