I used to be supportive of this idea, Death Note style. However, there are a few issues with it. First of all, a single vigilante would be unable to do do anything, since there is too much evil in this world. Second of all, a single vigilante would likely succumb to the God's complex. My proposal would be some sort of a council of vigilantes, something like what Yotsuba came up with in Death Note, just made up of as impartial people as possible. It should not consist of any businessmen or politicians (though political and social commentators would be welcome). If the vote to take someone out is unanimous (or maybe at least almost unanimous), this council could authorize a hit against someone. Since the composition of such a council would be diverse across the political spectrum, with the main requirement to become a member being recognition for high moral stance, the risk of this council becoming biased would be as low as humanly possible.
Now THAT is a very interesting topic lol
First, we have to agree on objective truth and a definition of evil. Then we have to talk through the vigilante’s morals/principles (or lack thereof), and how evil someone’s actions have to be to get nicked.
short answer: no.
slightly less short answer: In Europe we’re seeing vigilantes again. I think it’s a good thing right now because the vigilantes aren’t seeking out/attacking individuals, but rather defending individuals who are being physically attacked. So it’s great for now, but could go very bad very fast.
Not sure! If you've seen Dexter, you'd know its not that simple. But then again, if this vigilante, unlike Dexter did it only for the good of mankind and could control it... maybe?
But I think, fiction aside, no. Doesn't seem like a good idea for a person to take the law in their hands.
What do you think?
I wish there were more people who have the courage to fight for justice... true justice. Hypothetically, if I have a daughter who's raped, I wouldn't want the person who raped her to chill in jail, be fed food each day and be treated like a human. Those types of evil scum need to suffer. It's a waste of time to rehabilitate those who committed a crime while innocent people are physically or psychologically damaged or worse... dead. It's unfair that they get to live their lives out and "atone for their sins" while innocent people are either hurt or gone.
If there was real accountability in the world, it would be a much safer place. Now you have criminals being released and roaming the streets like in the cases of Iryna Zarutska or Bethany McGee. Read up on those cases and tell me how many times the criminals who targeted them were convicted of crimes. The world's logic is so backwards nowadays and many regions of the world seem to prioritize the rights of criminals over the safety and security of the innocent.
I've watched a good portion of Dexter and I loved it. It was justice. You should watch the movie Law Abiding Citizen. That was also a good watch
True! Rape victims hardly ever get justice. Especially here in Norway. Prisons are nicer than retirement homes. And sentences are so short that they're pathetic. If I witnessed a parent seeking justice for their girl, I saw nothing!
The only danger here is the risk of vigilantes targeting innocents or fuelling violence. In that sense, Dexter was actually perfect, being objective and thorough. His only mistake was involving other people and not being the psychopath he thought he was. It's tragic, really.
And people are driven by emotions. Vigilante justice can go out of hand.
No because it would be subject to his definition of evil people. Hitler plan to rid the world of the Jewish evil springs to mind. The human mindset hasn't changed and I've seen enough on gag to know there's plenty who'd do the same today to me.
Are you a killer? No. Are you a rapist? No. Have you abused children? No. Have you stolen things from others that could set them back in life? I hope not. Do you rub some people the wrong way? Sure... everyone does. Are you passionate about food? Sure. I've seen enough of your posts on GaG to know how passionate and knowledge you seem to be about food.
A genuinely good person would be able to objectively identify those aspects and deem you as worthy to live. Just my take lol

Yes, and I would like it if it was me.

Sure , I'd be down for that. Maybe I'll grab a bat and join.
Who's going to decide which people are evil enough to be destroyed?
Sure, but who decides what “evil” is?
What... you don't think rapists or people who murder in cold blood qualify as evil?
I do, but not everyone does. Democrats are letting violent criminals and r*pists off the hook routinely now. And what if your vigilante decides churches are organized crime because they benefit from public monies but don’t pay taxes? What if they decide jaywalking is a capital offense?
That is the intrinsic problem with vigilantism, and why it’s illegal. We codify law for good reason. If law enforcement is not doing their jobs, replace them with people who will. I don’t think the average citizen should have to arm themselves in protection from some psycho who thinks that they deserve to die because their lawn is 1/4” too long.
I believe most people have the capability to distinguish good from evil pretty well. I'm not saying I hate your comment, but I can't stand it when people say "But who decides what evil is?"
So criminals are allowed to kill people and "play God" but good people are not allowed to judge criminals? Makes zero sense. It comes from this false sense of moral superiority "I'll turn the other cheek, while the criminals can do what they do"
It would be a lot of work.
The issue is, who decides what is evil?
What... you don't think rapists or people who murder in cold blood apply?
Definitely.
Youzah!
