When I lived in Germany, I met some of these leftist USians who did move there. They usually were married to a German and/or had family ties to Germany. Few of them appeared to have better careers than they did in the US. I suspect that it's not easy to immigrate anywhere within Europe without being highly skilled (IT professionals, for example), having significant financial assets and a remote job, or being married to a local. Sure, some people go teach English in Europe, but that's not a long-term option because it's poorly paid.
