I would expect an Alex to be male without any other gender information. It is a contraction of course for Alexander or Alexandria but there are more Alexanders.

As the whole name, no, it's mostly a male name. Yet if it's a nickname, it's gender neutral, because names of both genders can be shortened to Alex.
