That's just male chivalry on display. Children absolutely should be first though. I think men just believe it's more noble to sacrifice themselves for those they deem "weaker". So I checked and there''s not official law that say women and children should go before no law at all so men can go and be safe before the women and thechilren the difference is that if there's women killed on the sinking then once they comeback they 're shamed for it becuase they did not help saving women (as women as seen as needing protection since they're more vulnerable ) but that was years ago (like in the 19 century or in the early 20 century).

Some men also did not let other men go to save themselves if women and children were still on the boat and needed help since it was their duty to protect women and children.

There's no official law and it never existed it's more a cultural stuff that a real true law and that was based on chivalry and duty to protect the less fortunate one.

Today there's no laws and men go save themselves at the same time as women after obviously the captain of the boat is the chief so he can kind of decide and give order to what he prefer personally.
