Well generally that is true. But I wouldn't want to lose both the pilot and copilot on a flight from Barcelona to New York. Know what I mean? Hard to find a replacement in the available time frame while hurtling over the Atlantic Ocean at 600 mph sealed inside a pressurized cigar tube with wings.

But despite our human tendency towards narcissism, few organizations are gonna collapse due to the loss of a single person. Business, military, sports teams, life goes on. Stuff will change. That's all. Performance may drop off for a while. Someone may step up. Someone new may come into the picture.

In relationships, people endure breakups and find new partners. Is there pain? Sure. Do some people end up happier with someone else? All the time. Does the world end? Almost never. We find a way to find happiness.

If you think you're indispensable, you're delusional. And maybe a bit of a narcissist. Maybe dial your ego back a bit and try some reality based humility instead.

I disagree. You should identify the most critical task at your workplace that only you perform and intentionally cultivate an aura of extreme incompetence regarding that specific process. By ensuring that no one else knows how to access the necessary files or execute the required software, you render yourself permanently indispensable. Make sure to frequently mention that you are the only person keeping the company from total collapse. If anyone attempts to train a colleague to assist you, simply delete the relevant data or claim the system is malfunctioning. This creates a state of perpetual reliance where your presence is mandatory for the survival of the organization.

Disagreed entirely. There are criminals... rapists and sexual offenders, murderers, people who would not hesitate to kick you on the floor if it meant themselves getting ahead in life. Why would ANYONE think those kinds of people are indispensable?

The truth is and will always be that some people are more valuable than others. And it depends on the scenario as well. As an example:

Let's say you're trying to colonize another planet and you have to choose between letting a mother or a leading scientist in charge of resource generation and distribution (a job no one without experience and knowledge of can do on the planet) live. Which do you choose? Any intelligent person would choose the leading scientist as they matter more for the continuation of our species.

Try putting just any halfwit behind the wheel of a truck. Or try getting just any grad to teach a subject they know nothing about. Or get just any clown to help with your surgery. etc etc.

While everybody is just a person like any other, there are nuances, and experts in fields, who are not just a title.

Everybody thinks they are "top of the food chain" but few people can do the jobs that actually require expertise. It's why real expertise is indispensable.

The first job I had was part of a 2-man engineering group in an electric utility. I was offered another job and was concerned that I'd be leaving my boss with no one to help him. He told me not to worry, someone else will come along and replace me. It's a very useful lesson that I've used many times in my life.
