Why is American speech so garbled?

Because we corrected the flaws we inherited from the English and now the Brits, Aussies, and new Zealanders are stuck in the past with flawed versions that make it difficult for them to understand proper English when they hear it. Their brains have a subconscious block on our new and improved English.

They have a special problem with the letter "R". Letter comes out "Lettuh". Are comes out "Ah". Rabbit comes out "Wabbit". They cling to words like Muggles and still call places names like "Kingston upon Hull" or "Newcastle upon Tyne", "Southend-on-Sea" or "Stoke-on-Trent".

We will continue to assist them fixing their archaic language.

Corrected the flaws? You Americans sound like a bunch of squeeky cartoon characters and oftentimes I struggle to tell if some of your men are gay or not, and it often turns out they're not.
You've never even heard proper English in your life because Americans just assume that the original English accent is London. Actually the London accident as it is today developed later then the American accent.
Northerners speak with the same Angelic accent we did when the English first arrived on these shores. Even the Saxons down south had a language where they pronounced words like the Northern English equivalent.
If America's accent is the correct one then why is it recorded voices of old people that lived in the 1800's sounded deep, clear, and well-spoken? At one time the American accent sounded good and manly like the English one, yet still distinctly American. Now Americans sound like they've breathed in too much helium.
I put it down to the American slop diet.

Unfortunately the rule bound Americans seem to have decided to vocalize all the written letters.

Whereas the rest of the world knows that Caxton fucked it up to buggary & back in 1476. Plus he hired wog (i. e Euro) typesetters who injected silent letters and removed 6 quite useful English letters as a cost cutting exercise.

So we all know, you should ignore how the word is written except for Americans, who have no excuse because they all went to the US after Caxton and should know better.

They even pronounce every R regardless of a vowel not following.

I don't think it's garbled, particularly. We do have some regional accents however that are really hard to understand
