Asking this question means you don't understand the role that clothing can play in such crimes.

Rape is always a crime. To commit rape, one must be willing to break the law - in this case, one of the most serious laws - which is not only wrong on moral grounds but also potentially comes with severe penalties. As a rule, the type of person who would do this is not a moral person at all, and completely lacks empathy for others. In nearly all cases, they understand that rape is a serious crime but either believe it shouldn't be or they believe that they are above the law. Such people are incredibly dangerous. Most of them would not hesitate to maim or murder either.

Nothing could justify these crimes to any moral person or system. But these people don't believe such rules apply to them. This is either because they are mentally defective, or because they were raised with incredibly corrupt values.

What most people fail to understand is that such people are already looking for an excuse (what in their minds is "justification") to hurt people. Their values are warped and sick, and not representative of the vast majority of people.

But to these sick and dangerous people, revealing clothes is justification for rape, just as visible signs of wealth are justification for robbery and indications of a different religion are justification for violence, potentially including murder. To these criminals, these things may be justification, but western societies (which are based on Judeo-Christian values) certainty does not.

The problem is that people forget that such western values are not always the rules in force depending on where you are and when you are there.

We all know that there are dangerous areas in most large cities - places where western values are barely taught and rarely embraced. But these dangerous areas tend to expand significantly in the dark of night. For example, many convenience stores are reasonably safe during the day, but draw in a criminal element later at night who tend to loiter and cause trouble. The areas around nightclubs often are the same way - safe in the day but far more dangerous at night.

One of the reasons lights always have spider webs around them is because bugs are drawn to the light at night, and the spiders see that as an opportunity to eat. Likewise, convenience stores and nightclubs work the same way for criminals - they provide a big source of potential victims, many who are tired, maybe drunk or high, and overall not at their best to defend themselves.

Tight or revealing clothing is one of the things such criminals use to target victims, and in some cases, to justify their victimization. Society isn't making that justification, the criminals are - society is merely recognizing this fact and warning people of that fact. That's not at all the same as endorsing the justification of those criminals - rather it's the recognition that the best way to deal with crime is to avoid being a victim in the first place.

Actually addiction to porn causes rapes. It has been proven. Rapists have said porn was a reason.

No never. But I think people are too quick to draw hard lines and then want to argue one way or the other. To me it’s like locking your car or locking the front door of your house. If you don’t lock your door are you asking to be robbed? No of course not, it is still the robber’s fault if they break in and rob you. But it is usually smart to lock the door, imagine if somebody said "you should lock your front door" and people got angry like, are you victim-blaming me for not locking my front door? That isn't the point it is just something to consider because the world is not perfect. JMO!

uhh nope. this analogy doesn't work because you could literally be dressed in any outfit dressing up or not and a rapist will still take their opportunity to rape. dovecenter.org/what-were-you-wearing-exhibit/

I don't believe that dressing more modestly will reduce your risk of getting raped. I used to dress skimpy all the time, and I've never been raped. I have some friends who dress far more modestly than me, and they got assaulted. I think better advice to reduce your chances would be to not walk alone at night regardless of what you are wearing. Be careful of who you meet up with. carrying petter spray, etc.

@emeraldsaphire I think it is hard to know what changes odds based on what has happened with one person whether you or someone else, someone might say “I never lock my car and it has never been robbed, my friend always locks his car and it got robbed” but that wouldn’t mean you shouldn’t lock your car. It is most likely for some other reason like where you park vs where they park or just luck. With this stuff it is more likely a whole set of factors like, where you are, who you are with etc. And to say again bc sometimes people focus on this, it is always totally the fault of whoever does it and with the comparison, it would also be the fault of whoever robbed the car whether or not it is locked. @emeraldsaphire so you don't think that dressing inappropriately is a risk factor relative to attracting people who are likely to rape you or assault you in some way? I think it really is.

Most raped women aren't dressed like hoochie mamas. Our clothing has fuck all to do with a guy deciding his orgasm and his sense of power is more important than our lives. As a supposed psychologist, you should know better. Then again, you're also the same one who claimed that I, someone with diagnosed ASPD, will feel regrets at some point in life, despite that not being even possible.

Only if you're mentally unstable and violent. No sane person with a healthy adult personality ever saw legs or cleavage and said to themselves, she's got it coming. That is criminal insanity territory. People like that cannot process the word "NO" with grace and civility.

And "inappropriate clothing" is a completely subjective judgement based on the observer's opinion which is commonly fueled by bullshit religious delusion. Sorry but you don't get to determine what is appropriate and inappropriate for everyone else.

I doubt it is a cause at all despite the prevalence of suggestions it is. Short skirts, tight cleavage tops are not exactly unusual and quite commonly seen in the wild.

Inappropriate conduct could be. I do remember a rape trial where the girl said she and the guy where just having a bit of fun but the guy thought it was more than a bit.

It is quite possible that the guy is having consensual sex whilst the girl is being raped simply because girls can go into a freeze response. In some jurisdictions the girl is not obliged to say STOP/NO.

So it is quite possible the guy does think it is consensual while the girl considers herself as being raped.

We actually need some research about this. I can imagine a study in which some women dress very scantily and others very conservatively and record. How many are approached by vicious criminals intending to assault them? It's admittedly a very risky idea, but seriously, if you wanted to answer this question, you would need to design a very careful study. In the breach, assuming the clothes have. Nothing to do with being raped. You have implicitly given permission to women to dress as they want and that is the whole point of even asking this question. It doesn't matter to those who think this is a good idea what the actual effect of clothing is and none of us really know because it has never been an adequately measured and I suspect it never will be. What it comes down to is those who think that giving complete freedom to women to dress as they want is more important than possibly informing them about a potential risk factor for being raped.

I don't think anyone here believes that it is. But criminals can and do use such criteria to select victims or to self-justify their crimes. That's wrong, but it still happens, and occupying the moral high ground won't change that.

Only scumbags would make those kinds of arguments.

But realistically, Western women need to take care of themselves because they have imported a lot of the problems, with the policies that they themselves endorse, into their former high trust societies.

Most rapes don't happen after night club visits but on girls who walk after work home in normal clothes on normal schedule.
Most rapists prepare their crime to specific time and place, what has nothing to do with clothes choice of the victim.

No, not at all. Let's be real though; there's just no way that provocative clothing isn't having some kind of effect. The purpose of the clothing is to entice. It only stands to reason that clothing designed to showcase your sexuality is going to make people want to have sex with you.

That being said, the people who are inclined to do something like that probably aren't going to hold off on committing a rape because their victim was dressed modestly.

Just because she goes out looking like she wants to fuck does not mean she wants to fuck you. I don’t know why this is such a hard concept to grasp. If you think it’s a valid excuse then you should be raped and then let me know how you feel about it.

No. Even if she's walking around naked, rape can never be justified. Rape is violence.
There should be extreme penalties for rapists.

Also, a bit of serious reading...

Established factors increasing the odds to be raped:

      - being married or cohabiting with a partner (since the most common offender is an intimate partner)

      - being young
      - being a sex worker
      - being poor or homeless
      - becoming more educated and economically empowered (where sexual violence is perpetrated by an intimate partner)
      - having a substance use disorder
      - being autistic
      - having been previously raped or sexually abused
      - having multiple sex partners or engaging in risky sexual behavior
      - being incarcerated / institutionalised
      - being mentally ill or intellectually disabled
      - being part of LGBTQIA+ communities
