As Americans, do you feel a stronger connection to your ethnic heritage or to your fellow American citizens?

Every country has its own concept of nationhood, so I won't get into that. But one defining feature of a nation is that people can stand together for a common cause—such as supporting their country in the World Cup—even with people they might otherwise dislike.

For example, there are around 30 million Americans of Irish descent, while the population of the Republic of Ireland is only about 6 million. Do you feel closer to your ethnic kin living across the ocean, or to your fellow citizens in the New World?

For a Black American, this could mean Nigeria; for someone of German ancestry, Germany; and so on.

In many ways I identify with my Czech and Finnish roots. But I do feel connected to the very idea of what The United States are supposed to represent. My idea of what it represents may differ from someone else's, that's ok, and frankly don't care.

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

I feel this part of the declaration has been largely forgotten and its meaning distorted in recent years. But to me it's very clear. Unity makes me feel connected to the country. People who try to divide are what make us weak.

That's the problem with historical dramas. Unless it's about a well known person or event in history, it flies under the radar. My dad's a history buff. Being Finnish, he has a particular grudge against the Soviets (not current Russia). He's a HUGE fan of "The White Death"

The White Death is probably the most famous Finn, at least in the military context. And given the fact that Finnland now has the longest NATO-border with Russia, services like his might become highly requested again, in a not-so-far future.

I do not feel connected to my Chinese heritage from an ideological vantage point, but I do feel connected to Chinese culture from an aesthetic standpoint. My Christian ideology and Jewish bible ideology replaced my Chinese ideology and it replaced my secular Chinese value system.

The USA was settled by Europeans. That has been our culture for 100s of years. This wave of Latinos, Indians, Somalis, Haithians, Muslims... etc. did happen until 1965.

The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, also known as the Hart-Celler Act, overhauled United States immigration policy. Signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on October 3, 1965, it abolished the old National Origins Formula that favored Northern Europeans and barred Asian immigration. The law reshaped American demographics by prioritizing family reunification and professional skills.

I reject having our culture and demographics totally altered for political reasons.

I feel a stronger connection culturally to other white people, but sexually to some Black guys. But like a lot of whites I have too many countries to identify one for loyalty. Plus there is a physically aspect to the desire for some Blacks. I definitely have a lot of patriotism but I also see a lot of problems, because so many whites resent that a white girl could be into Black guys for sex. A lot of Black women, too, as if they are going to stop us.

My family has been here since 1740s. I'm American through and through. I obviously follow European traditions - no matter how they may have morphed from my ancestors - but consider myself American.
