They told US they were going to shoot one towards one of our AC's and where it would go. It went where they said it would. So, they can now hit any US ship they want to.
I think this would be a mistake by Iran because Americans are against war and this could get Americans to support the war and help Republicans in the elections. I also think Trump wouldn't mind one of the ships being sunk.
Any ship can be sunk. An iceberg sunk the Titanic so I think that given sufficient explosive power and the correct weapon a US aircraft carrier could also be sunk. That said, I hope that doesn't happen because I'm concerned that if it did a lot of sailors would die and the US would be very tempted to use a nuclear weapon on Tehran.

For people who know the real history of the Titanic, the steel alloy was defective. Had the steel been made to a real standard, the ship should have been okay and should not have sunk. If a modern aircraft carrier struck an iceberg, it would not be sunk at all. I don't know exactly what the Hull dimensions are for an Aircraft carrier, but I know the Terpitz and Bismarch in WW2 had 3ft thick steel hulls, and they were impervious to 12,000 pound bombs dropped by the UK during the war. In fact, in one case Terpitz was struck in an ammo magazine by a 12,000 pound bomb, and all it did was cripple that particular gun, and didn't even scratch the hull itself. They also tried high explosive piloted torpedoes from beneath, and those failed to scratch the hull too.
Anyway, Titanic was a cruise ship, and a poorly designed and poorly engineered ship at that, and so it sinking from hitting an iceberg is nothing compared to a battleship or an aircraft carrier. Even if you nuked an aircraft carrier, it would not sink. The USA tried that experimentally after WW2, and nukes proved to be nearly useless against full-scale naval vessels.

The Titanic's steel was so defective that it was stated in documentary about 20 years ago, that it was around 30 times weaker than modern steel, as of 20 years ago. We've since discovered how to make steel a further 5 to 10% stronger than it was 20 years ago.

One of my college professors got his first PhD from a UK university, and they didn't let him take anything other than food preservation, because his test scores weren't high enough initially. He got his second PhD in Microbiology, eventually.

@FrodoSkywalker007 its important to remember the difference in airwarfare technology and tactics between the present air war with Iran, the air war in 2003 invasion of Iraq, the gulf war to the Vietnam war. The US military since the Vietnam war has been constantly working on technology and tactics that will allow their aircraft to operate over an enemy territory defended with radar and anti aircraft weapons. We see with the Ukraine invasion where the Russian airforce is unable to operate inside Ukraine and this unable to provide air support to their ground forces.
We've had remarkably few casualties of any kind. What the heck are you talking about?

You can't sink an aircraft carrier. The USA tried it with one of its old ones and even after a huge amount of damage it wouldn't sink.
But any hit on one would be a propaganda victory for Iran and send a message to the world the USA isn't all powerful.
Americans have to realise they are the aggressors in this war. Iran isn't a good country but neither is Russia, north korea, china etc. It's being attacked because Trump is being played for a fool by Israel.
So if a ship did sink i think Americana would ask do we want to be mired in another Vietnam.

They are semi guided munitions. I say semi because they aren't all that accurate. They don't need to be. But hitting the flight deck of a moving aircraft carrier is a little tougher than hitting a fixed reinforced bunker or cave complex that cannot move. Also, there's no need to sink an aircraft carrier. All you need to do to turn it into a cruise ship for Naval personnel is crater the flight deck. No flight deck, no operational capability. Say bye bye to the carrier and its entire battle group. They go where the carrier goes.
@msc545 the Bismarch was sank by its own German owners from the inside, after the allies, mostly UK, crippled it by hitting the rudder and then disabling the weapons. The ship was never going to be sank by 100lbs torpedoes, nor would it be sank by a modern USA or Russian torpedo if it were still around. The Germans sank it from the inside out using High Explosives and a designed mechanism, because they didn't want the ship to fall into allies hands, and because they'd rather die than be taken captive alive by the allies.
Modern USA Aircraft Carriers are even harder to sink than was Bismarch. You'd probably need to nuke the thing from the inside out to sink it.

@OneViewpoint not thst easy to hit an aircraft carrier. Remember they have airwings that can shoot ballistic missiles down a long with cruisers there to shoot missiles down, a long with missile jammers and aircraft carriers move. Not an easy target

That's what I said. But AA fire is far from perfect. The cost to defend is an order of magnitude higher than the cost to attack. And aircraft are not very good against missiles. Only 3 or 4 have to get through to render a flight deck useless. No usable flight deck means no operational capability. The entire battle group is neutralized without sinking any ship.

Iranian missiles would never get close enough for AA guns, sea sparrows or lasers. Even if they did its likely theyd be jammed, that happened in the Falklands war where Argentinan exocets were jammed, didn't help ships without jammers

You're delusional if you think US ship defenses are impermeable. Even in a carrier battle group. Like I said it's an order of magnitude more expensive and harder to defend than attack. Ships carry finite stores of munitions. And you don't need to do catastrophic damage to put a carrier out of operation. Crater the flight deck and that carrier may as well be sunk.

A good placed torpedo that creates a huge gas bubble beneath a ship and breaks its spine could sink even with one hit a carrier. However I think such huge ship would take a while to sink and human loses were not really that high. Aircraft carriers travel in carrier groups of several ship which would help to evacuate most sailors.
I don't think US would use a nuke because Pentagon knows next nuke target is Tel Aviv if Iran gets nuked. Probably a massive conventional bombardment could be a response.

There are anti-missile missiles, probably anti-missile lasers now, and defenily a "Flak cannon" which is basically a giant chain gun that first close to 5000 rounds per minute which intercept incoming missiles and guided bombs. You would need a true cruise missile flying under radar to even get close to the thing, and that probably couldn't carry enough payload to scratch the asphault on the runway of the carrier. And I'm pretty sure Iran doesn't have true cruise missiles, at least not good ones.

I at least was taught military history and strategy for 4 years, and I tried to join the Marine Corps twice: Once when I was 18 and again when I was 21 years old. They turned me down both times due to prior medical history, which in hindsight might have been the right thing to do. However, I probably still have the highest ASVAB score on record with the Marines 8th District, which is to say I completed all sections and only missed 3 total questions on the test.
Anyway, I'm a real student of the history of warfare, and nobody ever won a war by "trading combat unit kills" with the enemy. You win a war by attacking infrastructure and logistics, not enemy combat units.

Tell the whole story. They spent four weeks running various tests to see how it could absorb damage. They did NOT spend four weeks trying to sink the ship completely on every test.

It's unlikely that Iran could sink a carrier or a battleship completely, but any missile hits to its deck and towers will of course do damage to targeting capabilities as well as planes..
