Did They Abolish Slavery Out of Love for Humanity, or Out of Pure Terror and a Spreadsheet?

According to what I heard from a writer, the idea that the British abolished slavery out of morality or Bible verses is a total fairy tale. It was entirely about sheer terror and cold, ruthless math!

When slave rebellions in Haiti and Jamaica spiraled out of control and white masters started getting their heads chopped off and skins peeled, the empire's throne shook. Demographics reached a point where the slave population vastly outnumbered the masters; every night, sleep was ruined by the stress of "will our throats be slit tonight?" So the real issue wasn't enlightenment, it was survival.

And of course, there's the financial side of it: A slave is a capital asset. If they get sick, die, or perish in a revolt, all your money goes down the drain. Between feeding, housing, keeping them under lock and key, and patrolling them, security costs completely eclipsed the profits. With the Industrial Revolution on the doorstep, the cheap wage-labor model—which didn't rebel, didn't revolt, and could just be fired when sick—forced the clumsy, expensive machinery of slavery into the history books. Underneath the veneer of civilization, it was always just fear and a calculator!
