Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive Democrat and former public health official from Michigan, is running in the November 2026 general election against Republican nominee Mike Rogers for an open U. S. Senate seat. If he wins, he will become the first Muslim U. S. senator. He is currently ahead in the polls.

I think it would be a significant moment in American history, especially in terms of representation and the diversity of people serving in government. I don't believe someone's religion should automatically determine whether they are qualified to hold public office. What matters to me is their character, competence, policies, and ability to represent the people who elected them. I'd be interested in seeing how he performs if given that responsibility. Ultimately, I'd rather judge a politician by their record and what they bring to the table than by their religious background.

He's not from MY state, so I don't care. Senators aren't important anyways. I don't even know who MY state's current senators are. Literally, no one would've even known if he was Muslim. And we already have Muslims in Congress. What does it matter what his religion is? Senators don't have much power anyways
