Was my friend wrong about hitting back, or was his classmate racist?

My friend who is from a different country living in the UK said when he was in high school that if a woman hits a man, he can hit her back. His classmate told him he's a woman beater, my friend said its his opinion, the classmate said no, and told him if he doesn't like it, he should leave the country.

I think his classmate was a racist.

The values of societies is different. In islam as example, totally acceptable to beat wife. In some cases, can behead or or daughter to maintain honor, as that is most important. This is just an example.

Also may be ok in Asian countries

Not as accepted in some western cultures.

It is wrong to hit someone so whether you're male of female, you're doing wrong and should be punished. Either by the victim or someone else.
