I guess Neymar is kind of from the newer generation, but will there ever be others?

It will. Erling Haaland is slowly becoming one.

Ah, Norway and Leeds. Norway isn't in the World Cup and I don't watch the English league so I wouldn't know him

I know this question is old but it caught my attention.
Football will always produce legends. I'm sure when Maradona and Pele were playing, people said there will never be another. But then Messi and Ronaldo showed up decades later.
So long as people are still playing the sport, there will always be new talent.
Now? It looks like Haaland and Mbappe are set to become the new rivals.

I just saw this post. Everyone is saying Haaland. While he may be a great player, it doesn't mean anything if the rest of the Norwegian team sucks! Yes, league football has a massive following, especially in Europe, but I think to become a legend you need to be successful on the international level, not just the club one. And I'm not saying he WOULDN'T be, but it's kind of difficult if Norway most likely won't even qualify for the World Cup. People are saying that Haaland will get the Golden Boot in 2026, not taking into consideration that Norway most likely won't even qualify.

Wrong. Messi's Argentina hypothetically sucked as a team. A great player must CARRY their team as Messi did in the world cup finals. A legendary player won't rely on his team, HIS team relies on him and thats the way its been set up in history.
Look at pele. He won 3 world cups and people soely acredit him to winning those world cups.. and thats why he's considered a legend and not other members of his Brazilian team. You have to STAND OUT amongst your peers to become a legend.
Do you understand what im trying to say? - 10 mo
Considering you didn't know who Haaland was a few months ago, it's interesting that you now know what people are saying about him. To be 22 and have people talking about you in such a way is impressive in itself. That alone foreshadows his legacy in the future. Look at how many records the guy has set already. People see the characteristics of "legends" in players such as Haaland and Mbappe. This is why they're so highly respected.

Everyone said messi would never win anything on a international level.. for YEARS. and he did.
Like i said, Haaland is still young. Whos to say Norway won't pick up more norweigan talent as the years go by. Norway could become a formidable world cup contender.
That's the beauty of football. The game is unpredictable.
No one thought Morocco would reach the semi finals and they did. Similarily, no one thought Japan would beat Germany. It's not the team, its the players who can make or change a game. - 10 mo
Same reason Brazil got whooped 7-1 by Germany after Neymar went out with a broken back. So while what you're saying isn't untrue, football is a TEAM sport, and you can't achieve results by relying solely on one player.
When Pele played there were different rules. There was no offsides, so it was much easier to score goals.
I didn't hear about him because Norway sucks and I don't watch the British league. I've never seen him play, but I trust what people are saying about him. - 10 mo
I'm not saying a team SHOULD rely on one player
I'm trying to define what a legend is.
Usually the players who became legends STOOD OUT amongst their peers. They were the stars and they didn't just blend in as just another member of the team. They made their legacy by playing their own game not by relying on teammates. their teammates relied on them. I'm trying to make distinctions between legends and the other players.

Yes, the new generation is Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappé, Phil Foden and Vinícius Júnior.

I only know Mbappe and Vinicius Jr, but they've been around for a while too. But do you think they'll ever be as big as the other guys I listed though?

Mbappé and Haaland are young and already bigger than Rooney or Suarez.

Embappe isn't really known outside of he football world though. Like people who have no interest in football know who David Beckham, Pele, Ronaldo and Neymar are, because of ads, news and movies, but I don't think anyone outside the football community would know who Mbappe is.

ThĂ© people tou listes arenât well know outside football world either in France so itâs not a good Fact
People know Beckham Ronaldo and Neymar cause girls think they look hot
In 2018 every girls though Griezmann was hot so every body knew him
And Pele insât know at all un France outside football fan
The one everyone know though is Zidane in France at least - 1 y
Yeah, they think they're hot. But like Beckham, his name gets thrown around A LOT, and they even named a movie after him. Plus his wife is also a pretty successful model. And Neymar was in a few movies. Ronaldo because of headlines, he is certainly more popular in Europe. And maybe Pele was more popular 10 years ago
- 1 y
I don't know if anyone will ever be AS big as Pele or Maradona, but you never know. At least in the States. Football still isn't very popular here, and I don't think it ever will be.

Messi too.
I know Pele is older, but people knew about him from television, articles and movies. But now he is old and sick, so he isn't really in the spotlight anymore. But people in my gym class still knew Pele - New 10 mo
Wrong. Mbappe has been branding himself for the past few years. He's been sponsored by Nike since he was 8 years old, he has a production company in North America, people sing his name in a songs, Kim Kardashian recently got her son to meet and take photos with him, he's around got 110 million followers on instagram, he hangs around the nba and he plays for arguably the most "trendy" club in the world right now.
You can see he wants to become more than a footballer.
And he will. After all, he's only 25.
Beckham only became popular once he married a spice girl and he was 25 by then. I'd say Mbappe is doing very well for himself. - New 10 mo

@Sitaraxx You think so? They aren't dating anymore?
don't understand why instead of provoking Qatar, they didn't just say home. The entire world isn't obligated to share their woke ideology.
I don't like how he acted at the medals ceremony, but I do command him for sticking up for Messi in Paris. - New 10 mo
Don't think the pr stunt was to "provoke" Qatar. It was to reassure and please the outraged public. but you asked a question about footballing legends and like I said, their personal lives should have no impact on their legacies. Maradona was a cocaine user for God's sake.
And no they aren't "dating" anymore. That was a brief stint and they "broke up" before the world cup officially started.
Oh and he acted that way at the medals ceremony because he's demonstrating a winner's mentality. He just scored a hattrick.. and STILL lost. You would be pissed as well. If he was all smiley and over it, it would show he never wanted it that much in the first place. Nothing wrong with athletes wanting to win, win, win all the time. It's how he's almost won 2 world cups at the age of 24.
- New 10 mo
@Sitaraxx
Maybe a little bit of both. But why did teams want to wear rainbows on their uniforms?
I disagree, but okay. But to be fair, Messi acted the same when he lost to Germany.
It's not supposed to be, but unfortunately it has become political.
As for the Maradona thing, there used to be a time where fans didn't care about celebrities' personal lives, but not anymore
- New 10 mo
@Sitaraxx They can show solidarity in their own country. They were guests in a homophobic country so it was political provocation. No one forced them to play in Qatar.
The antics I'm talking about are taking place ON the field. If they're good players they're good players, but if they wanna wear rainbow shirts, that's fine, just do it off the field. And the federations certainly shouldn't be forcing all the players to wear them. And that's just one example.
It's not the players, it's the federations. The players just have to do what the federation tells them. Either that, or not play. But some of the other confederations got smart and stopped putting up with this bullshit. Though don't even get me started on the hypocrisy behind Russia's ban.
