Human being are very ingenious, in fact human were able to discover and invent a lot of things. The first important discovery was fire, thank to it, we were able to improve our life condiction and to create a lot of things thanks to it.
Even if human beings did a lot of horrible things, we were also able to do beautiful and useful things. 1) Printing press - being able to copy love letters and send it to every girl in town.. Instead of writing one for each girl..
2) Light bulb - light source that wasn't fire.. Could mean.. Sex in night with light.. Without becoming a sweaty mess due to fire heat..
3) Airplane = how do you go behind enemy lines to score with the girls they have 😉.. Or impress a girl by making her the first girl who ever touched the clouds.. Toothless make Astrid fall for hiccup using the trick..
4) Personal computer = make better tech.. Get money.. Do hookers and blow..
5) Vaccines = you don't want your girl to die or watch her to watch her kids or parents die.. 😉
6) Automobile = Girl love horse riding knights.. Well you are short guy.. And cannot control a horse.. But you have potential to create a metal monster who is strong as 10 horses and can go faster than horses.. Do it.. Chicks are gonna get wet..

Telephone and light bulbs and all electrical in between. Having that said though, have to comment on that picture. Namely, Tesla invented the regular white bulb just as well the fluorescent one. He also invented the electric car before gasoline/oil derivates run car even existed. He set the sketches for possible "invisible" ways of connecting devices and sharing information via waves. Upon his sketches, the wi fi technologies were developed... And he lived in 19th/early 20th century... Edison stole light bulb as well as few other of Tesla's inventions while Tesla worked for him. Then he invented the lie that he came up with it after 999 unsuccessful tries, and then he somehow succeded... Blah - just a story to sell on behalf of motivational feel to it. He was famous and Tesla was just starting to be well known. Tesla then abandoned him and started to work alone. Whole his life he was just tried to be run over by greedy corporationalists... J. P. Morgan and the crowd. And he died alone and poor. So sad. He refused to share Nobel prize with Edison from pure spite and principle. - Now that's some principle!
He is probably indeed the greatest inventor of all times.
@Djaay until pencil was created, different types of archaic versions existed, including stylus, writing with feather... In very old times writing by engraving into stone if you want. People always had ways of transferring the information. What is that of use if you have no great mind and great ideas to share? Also, truly genius people often calculate in their mind. Reading Tesla's autobiography, one senses he truly despised "slow" and "ineffective" ways how ordinary people tend to do things. So indeed, he'd probably do fine nevertheless...
Well, without the development of writing, all the others you list there wouldn't have been possible (especially the printing press and the personal computer). The passing on, and sharing, of information trumps all the rest in my view :)

What should be added? 1. THE TRANSISTOR. The transistor is absolutely critical to electronics. Without the transistor - the most important invention in the second half of the 20th Century - no modern electronics exist. Certainly no PCs or smart phones. 2. THE PLOW. Without the plow, there is no civilization. Period.

And I agree with @captain_voidwalker but forgot to mention it: power generation. I used to work for GE Power Systems and without the generation of electricity, you can't run electric devices.
I also think the MRI and Lasers are also important.
@erandal understands... farming... which only happens with the invention of the plow. It is the first invention that enables the creation of agriculture which then leads to civilization itself.
Don't agree with the top 10 but mostly right. You can't have a real top 10 without mentioning the internal Combustion engine. Yes that's what cars have but the engine is broader than just cars, planes, heavy construction vehicles, military vehicles, manufacturers lines for mass producing all our shit.

I pretty much disagree with the NG list. These are all pleasurable things but nothing essential. Without them we'd just to things differently. The most genius as I see it is to grind up some rocks; cook them for a while and then get out some metals to make things from it.

My favourite is definitely George Washington Carver because he achieved all that he did while being a victim of racism and probably could have done much more than peanuts if he had been given the same chance that white people had, he sounds like a beautiful person.

We could start with the invention of the wheel. There is fascinating research about the effect of air conditioning on society, and of course the birth control pill.
I am partial to the pill for men but that selfish. I’m guessing most people think the Internet but I would go for the invention of fire since that is what brought us out of the darkness originally.
The snooze button on my alarm clock... I mean at 6.30am is a wheel/anti biotics/democracy... all sensible answers going to be appropriate? No is the short answer, no human invention other than the snooze button is all required at that time! lol
