Did you ever picked up commercial radio stations from other parts of the country or other parts of the world?

I live in North Wisconsin and tonight I picking up a radio Station from NY That station is 77WABC. While I was sitting my car playing with the radio

I know not cool for many, but this is done over the air and not the internet with this 30 plus year old radio

Sometimes at my last job I’d venture into the NYC radio zone in my travels, and listen to “enemy” sports radio on WFAN. Good god, I hated that Mike Francesca guy so much. It was really just his voice/accent and how great he thought he was, I’m sure he was very knowledgeable to be on the radio that long in that market. Oh, and the guy who calls NY Yankees baseball games on the radio is BRUTAL. Like in his case, I’m like “as much as I hate NYC sports teams, this is the biggest market on the continent, and they can’t do better than THIS GUY?” Holy shit, he’s so cringe, lmao. John Sterling is his name, I think. “The Yankees win! THEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE YANKEES WIN!” might get my vote for the worst call/catchphrase in sports broadcasting, lmfao

Back when I was a teenager (many many years ago), one of my hobbies was short wave radio DXing... listening to shortwave radio stations from other countries. I had confirmations (QSL cards) from over 50 stations in 6 of the 7 continents, every one except Antarctica.

I also picked up AM radio stations in the US (my home country) that E-skipped off the ionosphere at night. Farthest station away that I got confirmed via QSL card was ~2000 miles away.

I can remember years ago late at night picking up a radio station from Little Rock Arkansas. I live In Canada. About 1300 miles away

Yes. My car from 2019 supports still LW (Longwave) and AM, it's possible to hear radio stations from very far away on LW band.

When I used to do a lot of cross country driving I listened to some AM radio stations over long distances. There was a high power Chicago station that I could pick up with my cheap car radio in close to half the country. I could pick that up in the middle of nowhere when I couldn't pick up anything else.

FM stations didn't reach as far as AM. Not because they are FM, but because they are at a different frequency. FM is a higher frequency which doesn't travel nearly as far.

Yep! Skywave is awesome. My science teacher told me about it when I was in high school. Here is Virginia, I can get WBBM (Chicago); WLW (Cincinnati); WTAM and WHKW (Cleveland); WBZ (Boston); WFAN, WOR, WABC, WCBS, and WINS (New York); WPHT (Philadelphia); WBT (Charlotte); and WSB (Atlanta).

Tell me about it, my kids car has Wi-Fi, cameras that are linked to their phone. Their radio has FM and AM but you can't figure out the controls.

And the car can be voice activated

you should try Echolink No radio needed, it allows you to connect to other radios, repeaters and people. All you need is an computer, android, or Apple OS

A long time ago I had a job where I travelled around the country. Where I live there is a 50,000 watt clear channel AM radio station. I used to listen at night after the sun went down in places halfway across the country.

Yes. This is common. The 160 meter medium wave band has a characteristic of being able to convey signals a long distance at night.
