I can say this, I know there is automatic and manual transmissions. I have only ever driven the automatic type that does the work for you. Two pedals are enough for me without having a third and working more than I have to.

I tend to take ride share or public transportation because it is more practical in a large city. Traffic is just awful around here so not much use for a vehicle other than to get out of the city for a weekend.

I am sure there is great information on the interwebs about how all that functions. For me, it is press button, start car and pick correct pedal to move. Sorted.

The power from the engine isn't directly transfered to the wheels but instead goes through a variety of gears and depending on how big the wheels are you got different power levels on the wheels.

Eg lower power for starting the car and driving uphill.

Or high power which can only be effective when the car is already running but will than drive even faster.

Or an additional gear to turn the forward motion backwards.

Essentially it is gears that mesh together. say the gear off the engine has 10 teeth and it drives a gear with 20 teeth than that gear will rotate half as fast. If the driven gear had 5 teeth it would rotate twice as fast as the engine.
